Purchased cigars at a 30% discount because you pointed out to the local that four 8-5-8's out of 11 in the box had a few specks of mold on them? Owner of a corner store with a walk in gave me a half a box of em at 3.88/each.....who would/wouldn't have done this and why..?

I wouldn't have done this... I don't like moldy cigars... wouldn't put them in my humidors, wouldn't smoke them, wouldn't give them away, so I wouldn't have anything to do with them... waste of money... just my call...

As long as there is no mold in the foot, you should be fine, but I'm with the others and wouldn't buy moldy cigars. Reason I wouldn't? Mold tells me these smokes have been stored way too wet.

Well, im definitely going to smoke em. I am a cheap ass Greek and a sucker for discounted items.

No mold on the foot, only the head, and it was minimal at at the most, we are talking less than 5 tiny white specks of "mold" like no bigger that the tip of a ball point pen. I have been going to this guy for the last 3 months and all his cigars smoked fine, he keeps his humidity at about 68-70% not sure what the case was with these. After i told him he first denied it(every time i opened one up gave it to him, he quickly wiped it off and said "there's nothing on it!") then after i actually had to point it out with a pen in order for him to notice it, then he freaked out. and wanted to get rid of them.

Wipe em' off, let them dry a bit and they'll be fine.

What should i wipe them with, i took them all out and wiped them with my thumb and it easily came off, no stains on the wrapper.

Since they did have some mold on them, would you advise to remove the cello in case there were any spores on the inside of it?

I dont know, for some reason i think removing the cello for that reason but, on the other hand, if there were any spores left on the cigar itself the cello would protect my other cigars from getting contaminated.

As always thanks for all your input.

Use distilled water to wipe them down. Remove the cello and let them air out. Store separately from other smokes.

Your thumb is fine. If you want to wipe with a liquid, I prefer a paper towel slightly moistened with vodka, although I suppose you could use water too even though I don't see the point in adding something that was part of their cause in the first place and does nothing to help kill the colony root. Make sure you wipe from head to foot, going in the other direction could damage the wrapper.

Cello will protect the other cigars from direct contamination, but it's probably better to let the cigars dry a bit and then store them separately. If you see no regrowth after a period of time, say a month or so, then they are probably safe to be returned to your regular storage if you want. Keep in mind mold spores are everywhere in the air anyway, so all we're doing is trying to prevent a massive concentration of them in one place.

Won a box of HdM Dark Sumatra's on another auction. Received the box and half full of mold. Called Cust Serv for a replacement box which also arrived full of mold. Both where returned. Regardless of the auction price or deal, I won't buy mold.
