I few years ago, I was approached by an "expert" in self-organized mapping (SOM)on an online beer brewing forum.
This gentleman was, indeed, and expert in SOMs, which as far as I can tell is a computer aided method for grouping objects based on similiarities in characteristics. He had written several books on the subject.
It turns out, he wanted help quantifying the characteristics of all of the world's beer styles becasue he had some theory about how the map would turn out.
Anyways, I did a lot of work building him a spreadsheet that he could use for his program. I can't remeber what exactly happened after that. It seesm that his theory didn't pan out (or maybe he wrote another book). Regardless, I didn't receive a cent (but I did get a copy of the SOM software).
To get the the point; I ran across this spreadsheet in my archive at work. It is pretty interesting if you are a beer nut and it is based on BJCP style descriptions and my own personal interpretations .
