I have ordered my wine cooler & drawers (from forrest), I expect delivery of the wine cooler tomorrow. It is a New Air 280e (all black 28 bottle)

My question is for those of you who have converted a wine cooler into a humidor. What all is needed to be done to the wine cooler to make the conversion?

I'm not looking for step by step instructions I just want to know what needs to be done to this thing to convert it.

I know there is something with the drain that needs to be plugged..is there anything else you did to complete this project?

Any tips, tricks or hints?

Any do's and don'ts?

I am going to start a separate thread on humidification/seasoning.

Thanks!

Wipe it out with vinegar and let it air dry to remove plastic smell.

Really? I was under the impression the was a drain or something that had to be sealed...interesting. So you just wiped, seasoned and put in your cigars then?

I would wipe well with vinegar and then with distilled water and leave open (outside if weather permits) overnight.

You can plug the drain hole but i didn't and it holds humidity pretty steady.

If you use vinegar or bleach then I would wipe it down with baking soda in distilled water several times before the final rinse.

Then prop the door open and run a box fan into it for a few days. Make sure to do a sniff test before you put smokes in it. Close the door overnight then smell to see if it is clean. If not repeat step one.

Why vinegar and/or bleach and DI water? Mine didn't have any stinky smell so no need to add any other stinky smells. DI water doesn't offer anything that tap water wouldn't.

I just wiped it out with plain old water and a little bit of dish soap, clean water rinse, dry towel wipe down and loaded it up. Waalaa.

Clearly your not ocd enough to comment on this topic... jk

Some plastic has a lot of odor my wc was used so it needed deodorized.

It just depends on what you start out with.

I fill my drain plug with a clear silicone to trap the temperature/humidity level inside.

I put a small tupperware dish full of kitty litter in the bottom, an even smaller one in the top. Bought a squirt bottle and a gallon of distilled water. Get a hygro w/ a big display (so you can monitor it from the outside w/out opening the door).

The kitty litter regulated to ~64% in just over 48hrs. That's it. No plugging, no fans. I have a hygro in the top and the bottom...MAYBE 1% difference. It's a very small volume to begin with, so the humidity shouldn't be MUCH difference from the top to the bottom. Up in WA, half the time I leave the thing unplugged b/c the temp is good anyway, but YMMV depending on where you live. I think our relative humidity up there is around 40%? Not sure, as I haven't been home in a while.

I use a Vinotemp 28, no shelves (yet...gonna get w/ forrest after this deployment, or shortly before it ends), just old empty cigar boxes.

Enjoy your new setup!
