Anyone ever open/look into a box and see that the majority of the cigars have "plume" just on the foot? This is what I saw when I stopped into a shpo to pick up a couple cigars. The box (Four Kicks, Corona) was only missing maybe 5 cigars, and pretty much everyone I pulled out had this "plume" on the foot, none on the wrapper. To me, it definitly looked like mold so I pointed it out to the guy working the humidor. It was white (and almost certainly fuzzy). Just to let him know I was aware of plume and mold, I told him it looked like mold to me before he said anything, but he insisted it was plume....I had a feeling he'd say that. He said since it was white(ish) in color it was plume, whereas if it were green or black "that would be mold," and let me know "it's just the oils in the tobacco." 🤥 I didn't want to sound like a know-it-all so I left it at that. Ok, I didn't leave it at that. I told him I certainly wouldn't buy them (as if he cared). It looked too much like mold too me, but I'm sure many will go in, grab them, and not even notice, or be told "it's plume and desirable."

Back to the question I posed at the beginning...would a majority of the cigars in a box have plume just inside the foot? Part of me wonders if I go back there if he went back in the humidor and removed the box and/or replaced it with a different one....or worse, brushed it off.

Mold

No question. Especially in the foot --- I can understand confusion at times, if on wrapper.

I wouldn't go back there...but if you do, make the clerk smell the foot. Mold in the foot reeks.

I'd go back to this place. It's close, reasonably priced, and has a decent selection. I just feel bad for any poor bastid that doesn't have a clue. I just don't understand why they don't just send them back to the rep/manufacturer and get credit. I assume I'm the first to notice this....but before the employees stock the shelves they label each cigar in the box so you would think someone would have noticed this while they were taking them out. 🤔

Mold

Yep.

And if the clerk insists that mold only comes in blue / green and plume is while, tell him to leave a slice of tomato out for a week or two. All kinds of white mold will form.

Plume is actually pretty rare, and it tends to form evenly rather than being localized to one area of the cigar.

I walked in one last year that was like walking into a cloud.... it was very obvious they had a problem in there... it was almost hard to breathe even...... there was a big box of RPs that had a spiderweb looking mold almost.... when I mentioned it, and I almost didn't, the guy smiled and began to explain plume to me... I should have taken a hygrometer in there and explained some stuff to him... he obviously just worked there.... 😟

Also this is a newer release.

About a zero % chance of "plume"

I've only had one cigar with plume and I wasn't sure if it was plume or mold. Most of my cigars don't last that long, but an El Rey Del Mundo dirty dozen stick got lost in one of the humidors. When I smoked them in the first few months after I got them, they were good, but not remarkable. This one with plume was somehow absolutely delicious, so I spent some time checking all the humidors to see if there was another. Unfortunately it was the last of the dozen. I've found a few of my maduro wrapped cigars showed remarkable improvement with age, while the light wrapped cigars never seem to get any better with age.
