Hello Everyone,

I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and I have a 150 Count humidor that I am having issues maintaining a proper humidity level. Currently it is holding anywhere from 10 to 50 cigars at a time, sometimes there will be more and sometimes it will be empty because I tend to give out more cigars than I replenish with the mail delays.

I am currently using the CI cigar juice in it with a 4 inch sponge humidifier. I have tested the hygrometer to ensure it is functioning properly, but I am still unable to maintain the 69-72 percent range. Any ideas, aside from getting out of the desert.

Thanks for the help,

Jason

To keep the rh in a reasonable range, you need to keep the humi more than half full, especially if you open it often. Every time you lift the lid, the air in the box mixes with the ambient air. More cigars means a smaller volume of air that requires rh control. Reaching into the humi will affect the air in the box, but unless you leave the humidor open for long periods, the cigars should be fine.

I assume your RH is too low? Seeing how I assume its super hot and dry over there. I too would recommend heartfelt beads, or beads from cheap humidor dot com. I paid $12 on amazon with free shipping for 1/2 pound of beads which is enough to maintain 70% humidity in a 300ct humidor. The good thing about the beads is if your RH is too high it will lower it to 70%, and also raise it to 70% if its too low.

You just need something to put the beads in. I went with the end of a pair of pantyhose, pack them in and tie off the hose to make a nice tight ball.

To recharge them spray a couple squirts of distilled water on them every few weeks or when you notice the RH dropping, which may be more frequent given your climate. Also I am told they last forever, not sure if that is true or not.

I also dont know if there is any difference in beads from one seller versus another.

I've been using Boveda packs for some time, and they keep the RH really steady. For the size of humi that you're talking about, I'd throw three of them in there. What RH level you use is up to you. I use the 69% packs in my humis.

First off how "low" is the rh% dropping to?

70% is too high.

I agree. 70% is way too high. Shoot for low to mid 60s. You'll experience fewer burn/draw problems and your cigars will taste better.

Hmm. interesting. I have mine at 72% with the mixture. I guess I'm going abot mine all wrong? Everything smells and keeps nicely. Am I just holding mine at aging percentage?

I always had burn problems and I could tell they were too moist when my humi was that high RH, dropped it to 65 and can smoke to the nub now. Plus I think you're more prone to mold when it's that high. Just my opinion...

That's roughly the ambient humidity in my area (about 7300ft elevation, RC East). I think he might have a seal problem. That, and the sponges are crap anyway.

I use boveda packs as well, and it's relatively easy to maintain @ about 67%. Granted, we've gone through about 50 packs so far (we give a few away too), but they DO work...just not super cost effective.

Sounds like he needs a new humi, or what may be better over there is Tupperware and some 65% beads.
