Hey everyone, I am Ryan from Northern Kentucky. I am brand new, was recommended by a friend. I am opening a new sports bar in the area and really feel a calling to make nice cigar room/atmosphere where people can smoke cigars and enjoy the game. I don't know a lot about cigars so I am looking for input, good ones to sell, examples of what I am looking to do. Is it a good idea, if done right? I've smoked cigars but only casually and not very many, mostly cheap ones. But I don't know of anything like this locally and would help enhance my own knowledge of cigars. Any advice / input is welcomed!

Aloha from Hawaii 👍

I don't have any sage pieces of advice (...e.g., Wheel's suggestion...) but wishing you the best of luck in your new venture.

I will say this though...after a few months on this site (...especially if you end up bidding on cigars...), you may want to choke your friend's neck for telling you about this place [sarcasm]

We would love it. But, I'm not sure I would invest time money and effort into it without doing some serious market research.

Suggest you look at the demographics of your area, replicate those demographics, along with lifestyle and cultural considerations and see if someone is doing it successfully in other areas of the country that are similar.

Seems like a big jump to me, you not being a cigar smoker and having zero knowledge of the industry.

Plus, local laws may be compelling causing issues in different locales.

I live smack in the middle of an SMSA, and there are only a few places to smoke due to local ordnances. Perhaps that is what you are hoping will become an attraction and gain people coming in to smoke.

Even so, seems like you need to do your homework seriously to pursue a section when you have zero knowledge.

my 2 cents, since you asked.

Open your sports bar first....sans any smoking room, etc.
(I'm assuming you have experience in this sort of enterprise)

Then, as suggested by triodes, do some due diligence:
1) Do some informal market research, ask your "regulars" what they would think about a "cigar room"
2) Learn the local ordinances
3) Figure out the start-up costs, and the operational costs to "run" a smoking lounge enterprise
4) Remember, there's a good chance that at 1/2 your customers will not like "cigar smoking".....more if you're unlucky......so you have to take them into consideration. How will you handle that?

Hope it works out for you. You have a lot of hard work ahead of you. Without having any idea as to your site layout, I'd be tempted to keep the "cigar lounge" separate somehow.

hey guys I'm going to open a mexican restaurant soon. I've eaten at taco bell once or twice. What do you think I should do?

lmao, couldnt resist. my local lounges seem to have comfy seats, a small fridge with free drinks, good intake and exhaust, and the most important thing, great selection of cigars.

Like King and triodes said, check the ordinances, especially those having to do with ventilation. Good ideas for ambience (as mentioned by the BOTL's above) include free drinks that go with cigars (a popular lounge here has their own house-blend sangria FREE to go with their rolled-on-site cigars.) If the lounge idea goes well, then check license fees to sell cigars as well. Good luck!

So many businesses fail because the owner has a great idea and little or no experience in business or with the product or service. I was in the pizza business since i was a kid with my family. We grew to four locations because we know what it takes to run a pizza place.....

It is far different being an owner than being an enthusiast.

If you open a cigar bar and personally only smoked convenience store brands, you will not be happy with the results Jump in the pool with your feet, Not your head!
