THL....

as an English teacher who has lots of boys in my class who find themselves with the same problem as your son, your story is very common. Fantasy books are often the only way most young boys get into reading (it worked for me.)

I also want to applaud you for your efforts in getting your son to read...9 times out of 10 the parent only blames the school and the teacher without doing anything to solve the problem....you are a teachers dream come true

Thanks lukin, that's good to hear. Plus it's always nice to throw it in my wife's face now and then, I have so little ammo.

"Yesh, I do know it's 3:00 AM, yesh I've had a few, no I didn't put the trash out......remember when I salvaged Paul's school career and saved him from being a professional burger flipper?"

So, I got that going for me.

Worked for me, too. I can remember picking up I, Robot by Isaac Asimov in 7th grade. The world has never been the same.

At our home, we pulled the plug on the television. My kids are all readers!

Huge Pratchett fan. Just finished "The Science of Diskworld". Love Simon Green (especially the Nightsides and Hawk and Fisher). Just about to grab Butcher's newest Dresden. I'm also about 4 or 5 books back in the Icewind Dale series. I like to read them in thier multiple book collections.

THL - was your son's Master's entrance exam the GMATs or GRE's. If he got in the 98th percentile, it might be worth his while to apply to MENSA. They accept those tests for application. MENSA is an excellent resume decoration.

are you a member of mensa skatty?

I have always thought about applying, but I already know I am a genius and I'd rather not tell other people...I like to be underestimated. Maybe one day I will join though...just to be able to prove it.

No I'm not, but I'm planning on testing for it. I don't have any reason to, just another milestone I guess.

I don't know, I'll have to ask him. He probably said but since I'm not paying for the school anymore I wasn't paying attention that closely. LOL

I love fantasy books. Stephen R Donaldson- The Chronicles of Thomas Covenat was and is my all time favorite. I also got into Ann McCaffrey- Dragon Riders of Pern, Piers Anthony-Xanth series, Edgar Rice Burroughs-Martian chronicles;it was a shame that Burroughs died before he could wite the sequel the juniper chronciles. I think I will always love sci-fi fantasy stories.
