Hey all, need some recon help. I will be building a 15x15 walk in humidor.

If your local B&M has a perfect working system, I would appreciate any input on what kind of humidification sytem they use.

Thanks in advance

Mine don't use one. They have one but don't use it. Every time I went in and checked the rh was 60%
She said when they turn it on it bumps the humidity to over 90. They they just leave it off.

mine use what looks like plastic boxes with big circle cut outs exposing some type of honeycomb insulation.

The other one I go to has a similar apparatus but it looks like a crocodile.

Sadly, about half of the walk ins I have seen do not have a good system.

I don't operate that way. I take great pride in giving a cigar the best chance l can.

I have a few humidors and all have the moist n aire humidifiers. Only because
that's what they came with. Pure junk out of the box. I took the controller off
the top, and added about 4 foot of quality wire to get the controller away from the
box, and bingo...they work perfect.

If your B&M has a good system, please give me a model number

Hi Loobie,

Some points that you may have already considered.

Where you live (geography). NY is more humid than Phoenix.
Location in your house where the room will be (sunlight or heat sources).
Anticipated load (number of cigars in boxes (closed) and open).
Type of humidification - vapor or evaporation and the proximity to the humidification source.
Air and humidity circulation.
Materials you anticipate using to construct the room (walls) and shelving.
How the cigars will be stored (Spanish or cello).
What settings you wish to maintain (temperature and humidity).
Seasoning the room.

These topics could spawn a lot of discussion but I get the idea that you're serious about doing a good job so understanding the impact of being in Phoenix (for example) is important. I think that you understand and perhaps already have thought about the points I list so I'll limit my comments but will happily discuss any ideas that you wish.

I have a lot of experience with humidification devices, (mostly < 2000) and I neither like, recommend nor use vaporizers or water reservoirs because while humidity and cigars work, rain (and that's what a vaporizer does) and sitting water don't. My impression is that you're a fastidious person and may clean the reservoirs in your humidifiers but it becomes work when scaled to a room of the size that you're proposing.

Unless a store ages their stock (counterproductive unless they're charging for that service) their humidification needs won't be the same as yours. Also, their load will be more dynamic than yours - unless you smoke an awful LOT 🙂. Their location plays a role, etc.

Most stores have spongy cigars near the humidifiers and dryer ones that are further away.

You might want to get the number for some cigar manufacturers and ask their advice (if they're willing), they might have some good input. Whatever you choose to do, keep in mind that your situation is more unique than it might seem on the surface. Best of luck.

Regards,

Pete

Thanks Pete,, you obviously have some experience in this subject.

The room will be 15x15 with either spanish cedar or mahogany plywood (havent decided which), and slat
spanish cedar shelves. The floor is 1" solid oak, and the ceiling is 8ft tall. It will be insulated on all sides, and have a double entrance.

All of my reservoirs in the cabinet humidifiers get cleaned on the 2nd of every month now so that's not a problem if that's what it takes.

I'm in Florida so it is a little easier to control humidity. Mine are kept at 67 rh.

Cigar reps and manufacturers havent been much help because their square foot and mine are so different.

Just trying to get input such as name and model number if your local has a good working system.

Hi Loobie,

Again, pardons if I'm saying what you've already thought of and you've obviously put a lot of thought into this project.

I think of Florida as being pretty moist and of course, hot. AC will reduce humidity so keep your system flexible.

Use mold resistant insulation.

I was in a smoke shop who presented all of his cigars Spanish and they were in great shape (tasted that way too). His room was about 16x16. It was my first time there and I was in a hurry (with my son). I thought of you and asked how he humidified and he was hesitant to tell me but confirmed that it was an evaporation system. I doubt that I'll end up there again. Sorry that I can't offer more (and I can't vouch for his quality longer than what I saw and smoked today).

If you're looking for models I'd think that manufacturers (anyone that handles a lot of sticks) could give you brands that they use and you could contact the manufacturer and see if their products scale to your project and failing that they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Again, best of luck.

Pete
