Not being a whiskey drinker, I need a little advice.

For whatever reason. . . taste, strength, price, whatever . . . a very dear friend of mine drinks this Old Grand Dad 114

http://www.totalwine.com/eng/product/old-grand-dad-114/2845750

I give him a bottle every year for the holidays, but this year I would like to take it up a notch and give him something a bit better.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks.

That's a high rye bourbon. Basil Hayden's would be a step up for sure. But, Old Grand Dad is bottled at a much higher proof.

Another choice is Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection 2011 Rare Rye Selection. It's about $100 for two 375 ml bottles sold as a set. One is aged in a new cask, one is aged in an old cask.

The Beam family makes a nice 100 proof rye, but I've been loathe to purchase their products since they sold out to the Japanese.

Willett makes a nice110 proof single barrell rye

Gentleman Jack is a low rye. Old Grand Dad is a high rye. GJ though a really good Tennessee whiskey doesn't have that burn rye drinkers look for.

Old Grand Dad, made by the Beams as is Basil Hayden's, uses 30-35% rye. Gentleman Jack uses 8% rye.

John if you're looking to get him something with a similar flavor to what he drinks, google the mashbill.

EX. "basil hayden mash bill"

You'll find that Basil Hayden and Old Grand Dad 114 use the same mash bill, ie the same ingredients and proportions. For the most part what differs is the aging process.

It's pretty much the same for the W.L. Weller and Pappy Van Winkle. Though both bourbons are made at the Buffalo Trace distillery using the same mash, Pappy is bottled from the barrells stored in the premium warehose locations and aged a bit longer. Some becomes W.L. Weller 12 Year Reserve and most is bottled after about 8 years as Buffalo Trace.

Wild turkey forgiven is a bourbon blended with rye that's pretty good. I'd prolly just get Bookers if'n it were for me.

John,

If it's Rye whiskey he enjoys....pick him up a bottle of George Dickel Rye ( Green label ) and is quite affordable @ or below $25 for 750ml and is 90 proof. very good Rye IMHO

Guys,

Thanks for all your input. Very informative.

I think I'm gonna go with the Basil Hayden 8yo, if for nothing else . . . the mash bill being so close to the OGD 114.

The Bookers was also a consideration. Maybe I'll get him a bottle of that NEXT year.

Thanks again.

just my preference, but when I go over 100 proof, I prefer Bakers 107 to Bookers.

Paul, no argument that Dickle Rye is a fine Tennessee Whiskey at a great price point. But it's not cask strength, and I don't think it's an upgrade IMO but that's just personal taste there.

Have you tried the Dickle Barrell Select?

The original post noted that the giftee likes Old Grand Dad which is a high Rye Bourbon. Bookers and Bakers are low rye.
