Guess it is my week to look like [gonzo] . First it was the IRS scam on Thur, and then it was the Judicial Branch of the Treasury Dept. Some azz hat called and left a message on Fri that they were giving me the heads up on criminal

proceedings that were being initiated against me.

I called the number back and wanted to jerk them around but of course the call went to voice mail. The original caller had a heavy accent and by the background noise one could tell that the call was originating out of a large call center.

I'm sure that I could have paid to stop the criminal proceedings, but under the circumstances I will just wait for the feds to come get me.

[jester]

I really hope individuals are not falling for these scams.

In the early days of the Internet (the 90s) I had two jobs, one of which I ran out of my home office.

For some reason, phone scams were rampant in those days, and it was difficult to get removed from calling lists, etc.

The scope and variety of scams was amazing. I decided to fight back my own way, since no matter what I did, I'd keep getting calls, often from the same scam. I had several different "scripts", but it basically went like this:

Phone rings:

"Hello, is Mr. KingoftheCove in?"

"Yes he is. He's in the back yard. May I ask who is calling?"

"This is Tony from We'reGonnaScrewYa Corporation, and I need to speak to Mr. KingoftheCove."

"OK, I'll go get him. Hold on a minute please"

At this point I would hold the phone away from me a bit, and yell "Dad! You have a phone call!"

I would wait for a bit, and then I'd say loudly "Dad, the phone is for you. I have to leave now, don't forget to lock the door". I'd wait another 10 seconds or so.

Then I'd put a wash cloth over the phone, and speak using my "very elderly gentlemen" voice.

"Hello, this is Mr. KingoftheCove."

"Hello!. We are offering a variety of ways to steal money from you, blah blah blah.............does that sound good Mr KingoftheCove?"

"I suppose so. Sounds pretty good. What do I have to do?"

"Well just provide me with your blah blah blah blah.......so can you give me that number now?"

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear that. Could you repeat that please?"

"blah blah blah blah.......so can you give me that number now?" (in a much louder voice)

"I'm sorry, I need to turn up my hearing aid.....darn crappy battery. Try again, and speak louder if you can?"

Now the scammer is talking real loud, and I make another excuse.......and it goes on..........

I've had some of these azzclowns yelling into their phones, at which point I simply have my phone lying on my desk, while working on my computer. When they were done yelling, I'd pick up the phone and make another excuse and apology, and see if I could get them to scream the scam again.

Some figured it out sooner than others......but eventually they hang up.

I started getting far fewer calls after a few months of my counter offensive.

I used to have time to talk those crazy folks into circles as they soon enough either realized they had no chance or thought they had me confused and ready to jump. When that would be the case I'd simply play dumb and forget everything we were talking about. Again, some would get it and others not so much. My favorites are in the $hitter...cause everyone knows when they're being talked to from the bathroom.

Worked in a boarding kennel when I was in school years ago. Always getting telemarketers calling to sell something no matter how may times they were told it was a business not a residence.

Lady calls selling magazine subscriptions and wouldn't let me get a a word in so every time she would ask me how that sounded after she talked up some mag I very haltingly told her it sounded good.

Knowing what was coming I let her go on for almost five minutes.

She finally said "Great! Since you'll be signing up for all of our subscriptions I'm going to give you an entire YEAR free, how does that sound to you?"

I told her trying to stutter a bit and sound ashamed and playing it very straight "That all sounds like a really really good deal, but...I...I can't read."

Chick goes " O my God, I am so sorry" hung up and that particular telephone terrorist group never called back again.

About pizzed myself cracking up and took a couple of tries to get the phone back on the hook.

Most recent call lately I must be old and impatient, they asked to talk to Mr Zody I just told them nope can't talk to anyone. "They're all dead, I ate them" and hung up.
