hd ready means that the tv set is capable of reproducing hd, usually 1081 lines of resolution instead of the normal tv which has about 400. the difference between the two is vastly different then the numbers might suggest. by almost tripling the number of lines, you will see so much more vividly and sharper. the colors will be as real as seeing something happening directly in front of you.
in order to take advantage you need an hd signal and that requires both a converter box and the signal being broadcast to your converter by the satellite or cable.
with direct tv, you can add the hd signal by calling direct tv. they have at the moment some deal where they will remove your direct tv box and install the hd converter box at no charge. the monthly fee for the extra service is about 5 or 10 dollars.
when i had direct tv i had to buy the equipment for $500.00 dollars installed. the increase in my direct bill was increased by $5.00 for each set.
i would take the converter he bought back to wall mart for a refund and get it installed by direct, correctly, for no charge if they are running the special and if your friend has one set only, he can expect to pay just the $5.00 more per month.
there are only about 7 or 8 channels that broadcast everything in hd and all the satellites get the same ones. if a local channel broadcasts in hd the satellite people will show it on a different channel so that you can see it on your hd set. there is one sort of an hd national geographic station that takes you to places around the world and it is one we watch frequently. lots of animals and fish and all sorts of fascinating stuff that is safe for the kids to watch.
if he has the same tv set that you have yours would probably look better because you have subscribed to the hd channels as part of your package. if you haven't subscribed to hd and your picture looks better then his, you have a better tv set. and you should subscribe to hd service with whoever you use as a provider to take advantage of what your set can do.
