Remembering Stevie Ray Vaughan who left this world too soon, 25 years ago today.

I can't even imagine the quality of music he would have created today…

Been playing SRV all week long and tonight will be listening to the Eric Clapton performance from 8/26/90 that includes the encore with Stevie Ray. It would be his very last live performance. Although I have 3 or 4 versions of Stevie's last full set, I cannot bring myself to convert the files. It really saddens me to think of his passing, especially since he had cleaned up his abuses and his playing was superb by then.

Wanted to watch/listen & post his last performance, but what's offered on youtube is such a poor quality it's painful to listen to. Right now I'm jammin SRV with Albert King - In Session on DVD. Dig the intimate jam and how they played off each other. Also dig the simple camera-work. Reminds me of the days when I watched SRV on Austin City Limits.

Although I haven't converted any of the 8/26 show files, it is said that none of them are really good recordings. It is also rumored that Jimmie Vaughan has a soundboard recording of that last show but for obvious reasons it's too painful for him to have it released.

He was an amazing guitarist.

There was a kid that learned how to play from SRV... Kenny Wayne Shepherd, he was pretty damn good in his own right. Had an album or two come out that were pretty good... and then he seemed to have disappeared. If you watch him play, he even has some of Stevie's mannerisms, not to mention a similar sound.

Lie to Me? or was the other "kid" around the same time.

I've heard that too. I think it was from Jimmie himself who mentioned it in an interview, but I'm not 100% sure.

Not exactly. Kenny Wayne Shepherd started playing guitar around 7-8 years old because of seeing SRV live and then getting to meet him after the show (Shepherd's father was the promoter), SRV was his influence to start playing, but never "learned how to play from SRV". I'm not sure SRV ever taught anyone how to play.

frank, you may be thinking of Jonny Lang - another amazing blues talent, though not in SRV's league....I do like him better than most Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Lang isn't a kid anymore, but almost inconceivably, he was only 15 when he recorded Lie to Me. Shepherd hasn't suffered at all from picking up SRV/Double Trouble drummer, Chris Layton. That guy doesn't get enough credit, IMO.

As if SRV's death wasn't tragic enough, he'd been able to pull himself from his path to self-destruction only to die in a helicopter crash. RIP

Yeah, TG... that's what I meant. Not quite "taught him how to play", but the driving influence behind his style of playing.

I saw Lang on Beale Street about 20 years ago I think... was just a kid but they let him play in BB Kings... He did very well... 👍

There are 2 others blues guitarists I would add to this conversation Johnny Winter and Jeff Healey.

The kid definitely has the chops for blues. No doubt about it.

I've seen Kenny Wayne Sheppard a few times. He's ok.

Have to admit I'm burnt out on SRV.
