A friend gave me a Cuban Montecristo Sunday. I smoked it on the way home from work. As soons as I lit the stick, it started unraveling. I kept smoking it determined to finish it. Before I lit it up I had noticed it had a mottled wrapper, which is usually (not always) a bad sign. It kept getting worse. I began to think it was counterfeit but it tatsed faintly like a Cuban Cohiba I had smoked many years ago and I felt that no counterfeit would have such a nice flavor profile. Finally, about 1/3 the way through I just gave it up and threw it away. I was thinking that maybe I should have put it in the humi for about 6 months or so before lighting up. What is your take (yes, I realize it was only ONE cigar?)

Any cigar whit that kind of potential needs to be aged under proper conditions for at least six months unless you know it was properly stored for by the donor.

I recently purchased a few Montes from a very reliable source and their wrappers were more mottled than I am used to. The cigars were a newer release. I put them away for a nap and the discoloration has also diminished. I think they were too wet when I received them. Sounds like that may have been your problem as well.

A friend gifted me a couple of cigars from a cuban guy in Miami that gets cigars from cuba when he visits famity - for his personal use.. No label....i am sure it is from cuba but don't know if it is good one or maybe a peso cigar......if it was couteterfeit wouldn't it have a label? They were very dry so I am letting g rest before I try them.

Montecristo and Cohiba have a totally different flavor profile. Perhaps both the Cohiba and Monte were fake.

Provided it's been reasonably well cared for, it shouldn't require more than a couple weeks in the humi to become smokable.

Just because the band says "Montecristo" doesn't mean it's real. Your palette is experienced enough to remember what a Cuban Cohiba tasted like many years ago? LMAO? Do you work for Cigar Aficianado too?
Just because they're unbanded from a 'cuban' guy in Miami who gets them when he visits, doesn't mean it's quality tobacco. If they're that dry, that should tell you something. Fresh cigars are never dry!

Fakes abound. I've been gifted fakes by supposedly 'knowledgeable botl'. Know your source(s)....if you care about authenticity. Or, don't bother. Plenty of good fakes out there, too. Not a lot of sense in stressing about onesies and twosies.

Can't say I ever had one unravel on me.

Had one burn my lips once because I nubbed it too low, couldn't smoke for 2 days after that.

Saying you remember a cigar is much different than saying you remember what it taste like many years ago.
Are you sure it wasn't a fine Gran Habano you where smoking?

What got me back back into cigars several months ago was an infamous glass top box of yellow/orange wrapper COHIBA's from the Dominica. These were brought to me by an employee visiting home. I now know they were fakes, albeit they were still tasty treats that I gave several to friends and just indulged in the last one a few weeks ago.

Ironically, I have seen boxes of Partagas (PSD#4 and 898 Varnished) with the box code POS. They were produced in about 2008 and were wonderful smokes. 🤦

Threw in a lowball bid figuring it was likely neglected for some time. Won and opened it and was initially pleasantly surprised by the contents. But, the Monte bands were off-center and the wrong color. Tried some anyways, and still had the Cuban flavor profile but not the CC Montecristo flavors. They weren't awful, but also weren't anything noteworthy. They were decent mild Cubans. The fauxhibas on the other hand, were awful and got thrown out.
