French police dog killed by attackers in raid, hailed as hero

Published November 18, 2015

A French police dog was killed Wednesday in an operation targeting the alleged mastermind of last Friday's massacre in Paris, prompting an outpouring of support on social media for the fallen canine.

French police on Twitter said “Diesel”, a 7-year-old Belgian Shepard, “was killed by terrorists in the ongoing operation.”

Police forces often use dogs to sniff out explosives. At least two terror suspects were killed in the raid in Saint-Denis, including a woman who wore a suicide vest who blew herself up.

French police also posted on Twitter that “assault and explosives search dogs are indispensable in the missions of the operators of the raid," alongside a picture of Diesel standing in front of a row of officers.

The phrase "RIP Diesel" became a top trending search term worldwide shortly after the post. The hashtag ‘#JeSuisChien’, translated into English as “I am a dog,” also was used by many Twitter users in a show of respect for Diesel.

Rip Diesel.

Also, can someone explain to me how this POS is a "mastermind?" Isn’t a mastermind someone of great intelligence? I don’t think coming up with a plan that goes like this qualifies one as a mastermind:

1. Go to a few places that have lots of people.

2. Light off a few bombs and shoot into the crowd.

3. Kill as many as we can before we get killed or blow ourselves up.

Yeah, a real mastermind that A-hole was. A real mastermind.

RIP Diesel. Said it before, but I'll say it again: As a retired EOD guy, nothing I liked more than seeing the bomb dog and handler show up.

Even when one big azz dual-purpose dog "alerted" on me and came up from "rest" to "ready". Almost pizzed myself and played statue til his handler came over!

My (15 yr old) puppy dog, Madison, gave a 21 bark salute. But now he's tired and is napping on the couch.

There is no better animal than a loyal dog Although I don't consider my dog as an animal... he's a solid member of the family... I'm just the Alpha of his little pack that he watches over.

Reminds me of a "mark this up as a dumb idea" thing. A former neighbor mine (K9 cop) had a retired Belgian Malinois that was trained for apprehension, search and rescue, drug/bomb sniffing. He trained dogs for the force and had a bite suit and stuff.

I said "I'll give it a try." I suited up and he gave me a head start (he was giggling) then he sent Zima after me.

Not one of my best ideas. Good thing YouTube was not big back then.
