I've never really liked any Sam Adams products. The winter lager is barely drinkable but not any of the others for me.

Don't get the Guinness Nitro IPA.

Very bland.

It actually starts out pretty decent, with the creaminess of the nitro making for a nice contrast to the hop aroma. But after about 5 minutes it's like the flavor just dissipates. Gone. Nada. Adios.

I heard the Sam Adams dude Jim Koch (pronounced cook) on the radio talking about the Nitro project. Sounds like they're better prepared to deal with what happens to the hops in a nitrogen environment.

Thanks for the heads up on the Guinness. I've never been too big on the ipa bitterness, so it wasn't my first choice.

And thanks for the heads up that Sam Adams that we get out here is like internet cigars, they're the same but not really. 🍺

Yeah... Sam Adams has to be... um... good. Falls way short.

Sam is just shy of Gannsett crappy... and that's like saying coffee milk sucks to a Rhode Islander.

Sam's ain't my favorite go-to brew, but it doesn't compete with Hi Neighbor Nasty-gansett either.

Your left coast version might be different from the stuff here in the homeland.

Interesting comment about the local drinkability TG.

I always figured Sam Adams is "beer styles for dummies".

Hi Pat, long time no talk. Hope all is well with you and the family.

I agree that some of his stuff seems toned down compared to a lot of what we are used to. Maybe call it a gateway microbrew, so to speak.

Did you happen to be following all the crap the guys at Sierra NC had to go through to get the flavor of the beer to match Chico's? Holy hell... One of the guys in the lab was telling me that they spent like 6 months fed ex overnighting stuff back and forth.

I'm not surprised by Sierra having that trouble. Coors here doesn't brew much Coors Light here anymore. The corp was having too much trouble with Miller Lite so they brought that here to see if they could fix it from a quality standpoint. Different breweries have efficiency issues that have to be accounted for, and one of them IMO is hop utilization. Since Sierra Nevada doesn't try to overpower their beer like Stone does, they will have more issues getting the subtlety just right for the water being used.

Family is good. Oldest daughter is a Dr. Youngest is still in school. Wife is retiring end of next month...

That's great to hear, congrats to you and your family on those accomplishments.

About 4-5 years ago, a friend of mine toured the Coors plant, he complained that they didn't show Keystone being made. I asked him if all the urnals were out of order when he visited. He wasn't amused.

That's what Miles was telling me, that water chemistry was a big part of it. Last I talked to him, they were duplicating Chico muni water properties. There were some other technical things like the mills, brewhouse and tank geometry, but those were easier to correct for since they are constants.
