'dodging arrows'

Published March 22, 2016

A 15-year-old boy was killed when he was struck in the head while playing a game of "dodging arrows" at a friend's house, and criminal charges could be possible, authorities said Monday.

Caleb Fairchild, an eighth-grader, was playing the bow-and-arrow game Saturday evening when he was hit by an arrow in in Chapmanville, about 45 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said.

No parents were around when Caleb and two other kids were playing in a front yard, said State Police Sgt. C.R. Sutphin. The ages of the others involved weren't released but authorities said they were minors.

The motivation behind the game wasn't immediately clear.

"I've been a policeman for almost 25 years. This is the first time I've ever heard of it," Sutphin said. "They were just goofing around, thought it was a good idea. It's just a bad decision, if you ask me."

Film at 11... 🤦

Is this were you shoot an arrow straight up in da air and hope it doesn't hit you when it falls..??? 😕

There usta be a toy called Lawn Darts, giant-sized versions of the darts played in pubs...one kid would stand perfectly still on the lawn and the others would throw a dart in the air...not sure who the winner or loser was, never played ... my parents wouldn't let us have them...

As kids we used to shoot arrows at targets and one time my friend shot straight up and it was immediately recognized by all as a bad idea. Everyone ran. Never happened again. Lucky.

Jarts. Use to play the game a lot as kids. They are now banned for sale in the US and Canada but you can buy individual components and assemble your own. Never did the throw it up in the air and dodge it game though.

We also had our own version of mumblety-peg that we played with pocket knives and Jarts. Oh, the stupid things we did as a kids.
