Anyone here have a favorite? I have a rabbit and squirrel infestation and they keep eating my garden! I have tried sprays, traps, fences and still they persist.

I figure it is time to harvest a few.

That being said I am looking for a .22 that can use primer only rounds without to much of a hassle.

Any suggestions?

Ruger 10/22 won't run on primers but that would be my first overall choice.

I have but the decent ones cost as much as a .22 and I feel like I would get more use out of it. That air rifle is still enough to put the animal down but a .22 will put it down faster IMO.

If I do harvest them I am a waste not want not kind of guy. Since I know what the primary source of food has been for them I would probably cook them. So the antifreeze probably might not be a good idea, but I bet it is effective.

The air rifle will be louder also. The primer rounds are quieter than the action of my bolt gun

I too have a rabbit problem but I cannot solve it with airgun or .22!

Suburban living and everytime I slide open the screen the little 'turds run off---I can't even get sighted on them with pellet rifle!

Would only add if youre running it in a barrel over 10-12", buy the super colibri. Slightly more powerful, the standard colibri I'll only run in my 22 revolver. Had a squib in a single shot 22 rifle with the colibri. Bought a case of 5000 of the Aguila Super Colibri and have run every last round from that case through my Henry's without issue.

Have also taken out squirrels, chipmunks, a raccoon (accidentally - thought I had 22 shorts in the magazine) and a couple chickens. it's done the job.

Or, get a threaded barrel and a suppressor and run subsonic through any semiautomatic with threaded barrel. Tons of fun. I have steel targets in my woods, and when I shoot back there it's *click* then a ring. No report from the muzzle, and no supersonic crack. But, it's a lot of hassle for just some pest control.

Just pattern what you are going to use at the distance you plan to shoot from
Put some rounds into a piece of meat if you are worried about penetration, fragmentation and a humane kill with the round you choose.

10/22 is nice, my buddy has one mounted with a Sweet 16? Scope. We have it dialed in at 100 yards, it's great.
Stock is nice and has a full size rifle feel about it.

However the M&P 15/22 is very nice, I have one mounted with an old 4x Burris I had.
Accuracy is about the same but the MP is so easy to clean compared to the Ruger.

I admit I want to steal his scope though!

Lol scope on a .22? Seems like overkill. If you're bot open sight you're doing it wrong.

Just get those low velocity cartridges. Those seem to do the job on small game and really all you hear is the snap of the hammer.

Ha good quote. I have no trouble hitting clay pigeons out to 100' with the iron sights that came on my SW. That being said I hate being outshot with a rifle regardless of the distance. I decided to fight fire with fire, so not only can I outshoot my friend with his 10/22 but I can do it with SW at 100 yards!

Just make sure you are OK to shoot a firearm where you live, some cities classify a BB gun as a firearm.

There are air rifles that have suppressors built in that have no BATF restrictions.

I have a Rossi pump .22 (one regular barrel, one octagon) it will run LR or shorts and due to it being a pump it cycles fine. Holds 15 LR rounds.

Silhouette 22 target competition requires shooters to use iron sights on long rifles and pistols, as well as scopes on long rifles. The size of the target depends on the weapon and sights. CHICKENS are the smallest of the smallbore steel targets to shoot. They are about 2-5/8 inches from beak to tail. The steel on these, and all of the other smallbore rifle targets, are 1/4 inch thick. The main body is a little over 1 inch high. They are the closest targets at 40 meters (43.7 yards) from the firing line. RAMS are the largest smallbore steel targets and the farthest from the firing line. They set at 100 meters (109.4 yards) from the firing line. They are the second most difficult to hit. They are a little over 6 inches long from nose to tail but only about 2-1/2 inches high on the body.

The Ruger 10/22 is the old standard for varmint. As itsawaldo said the S&W M&P 15/22 in the AR platform is popular for plinking/varmit. Also consider the Colt M4 or Rock Island MIG 22 AR15-22. Mossberg's 702 Plinkster is a great starter rifle for young shooters. Target competition 22's are a whole different realm and many are single shot.

If all you're looking at doing is ridding your property of squirrels, consider the Savage A17 semi-auto chambered in 17 HMR. The ammo is cheaper and easier to get than 22LR. Also consider many of the high-powered air rifles on the market. I use a Ruger Blackhawk .177 cal. Air Rifle with 4x32mm scope and installed the Archer Airguns XMV Tune for a few bucks to improve the muzzle velocity for shooting ground squirrels.

It all depends on your needs and what you want to spend. A Mossberg 702 Plinkster will cost approx $150 without scope. The Savage A17 is around $400. A Ruger 10/22 will run $300 or more depending on options. The S&W MP 15/22 will run at $400-500. Colt runs a bit higher. However a Ruger Blackhawk or Air Magnum Air Rifle will cost you around $200 including scope and third-party enhancements.
