So Ocho has finally outgrown his 7mm-08. It's a youth stock and it's just a bit to compact for him now.


I've made up my mind that his next deer rifle will be a Browning X Bolt in .270.


I've never shot a .270 so I'm not sure which load to get him.

For his 7mm-08 I absolutely loved Remington core lokt hp 120 grain. That is a fantastic round!!!!!


So I'm thinking about the Winchester Power Max HP 130 grain.

Id like to try the hollow point again since it works so well in the 7mm-08.


Anyone ever try these rounds?

30-06 would give you more options and easier to source ammo. Not a lot of kick difference either.

Personally, I like the .308 round, but the snipers I worked with used 300 winchester magnum.

.308 would likely be easier on him.

308 will be more versatile too.

I know nothing about .308's or 300 mags...
but my UNCLE loved his .270...I have 15+ boxes

If he is above average height and weight I'd go to the Remington 760 Game Master pump...

Honestly a 243, 270, or 30-06 will all put down a deer. Shot placement is the key to a fast kill. I assume you will take your young Hunter to a rifle range to get use to shooting center fire rifle. Yes I know ammunition is expensive, but a well placed shot will prevent you from a long walk trying to find a half-dead animal. Having to finish off the deer with another shot.

Some of the responses made me laugh. No disrespect as y'all have not met my boy. He has killed somewhere around 16-20 deer. I've lost count. He is 13 yrs old. About 5'8" 130 lbs.

He has only shot and lost one deer, and I'm to blame. I left his normal ammo at home and I gave him some Hornady ballistic tips that sucked.
However all the deer taken in the last 3 seasons were dropped in their tracks. I hate to say it, but he might could out shoot his ole man.

I'm sold on the .270. The ballistics are far superior over a .308.

I shoot a 30-06 and my dad hunts with a .308. So eventually he will inherit those calibers.

I went with the Remington 270 to replace my 30-06 after it burned up in my Dads house fire. Mainly because it was lighter and my stands a hike.

I use Winchester Super X 150gr Power Point. Not sure about the power max.

Last deer dropped at the feeder, one before that went about 40 yrds and went down.

30.06 is my choice but .308 is a little softer hitting.

I like your choice of core lokt as a good mix of reliability and economy and have never had a white tail do anything but drop.

Fancier ammo is overrated

I hunted deer with a Ruger .44 Carbine, 240sjhp, the north woods of Wisconsin were brushy and most shots under 100 yards. One shot and I got meat.
That being said 30.06 (I believe all my ammo is 180?) is in MHO is the most versatile caliber, probably .308 next. They will both take on 95% of North American game, hitting them more than hard enough.
I'm so old school, sjhp is all I need...but I don't hunt any longer but I agree with gummy on ammo.
Get a popular caliber, the kid already knows about recoil, got enough deer, give him a round he can use everywhere in the country.

I'm not jumping on the band wagon but the 30-06 would be my choice also . I've hunted with a Remington 7400 30-06 using Remington Corelokt sp 180gr .

For the 270 if your in brush with shorter shots get the 150 sp if you have longer shots get the 130 . The only bad thing i will say about the Remington ammo is to make sure you buy your practice ammo and hunting ammo out of the same lot # . I've had some inconsistencies between different lots

Through out the years I have hunted with .308, 7 Mag, Rem 6MM, Rem 280, 25-06 and .270. My two favorites are the .270 and.280. The .280 is a little better ballistic wise but there was not a wide range of factory loads to select from. That may have changed in recent years but since I gave up hunting six years ago I'm not really up to speed on what is now available for the .280.

If you are primarily hunting whitetails I would highly recommend the .270 and also highly recommend the Nosler 130 gr partition bullet. I'm pretty sure that Federal now offers the 130 gr partition in their Premium line. Some years ago I reloaded all of my rifle ammo and harvested 40 plus bucks using the 130 partition. All but one dropped in their tracks and the one that did not only traveled 50-75 yards.

Regardless of what caliber you select give the Nosler partitions a try.

Second on the 130 grain Noslers.

Winchester Ballistic Silvertips in 130 grain work well too.

Also, the old school Remington core lokt seems to kill a lot of deer around here too.

The .270 and 30-06 are both classic and effective calibers. Nosler make some excellent hunting ammunition of you don't handload, but until you have the specific rifle, it's had to say what is going to shoot best in a particular rifle. IMO, fewer calibers is better than too many. Both calibers are almost always in stock and if your clan has more than one rifle in the same caliber it is less likely that any one of you is going to be without ammunition.
