I've had a Browning A-Bolt in 25-06 for the last 20 years or so.Pretty much traded off all the other rifles except those passed down.Hornady 117gr BTSP's..........deadly out beyond 300 yards.I'd recommend both caliber and projectile.I've had excellent results with Hornady BTSP's in 243,257,277,284 and 308.I reload and been using the same exact formula in my 25-06 for years.Good luck to you and Ocho

I have used Federal Premium 165 grain in my 30-06 for the last 15 years. Nice and consistent. This past season my daughter went out with me a few times. We decided to switch to a softer kicking ammo and tried the Hornady Superformance in a 125 grain model. They worked well for her and no complaints about kick -and she is 110 pounds soaking wet. I think you and Ocho should look at the ballistics of the rounds in the window of your most common shot. With 20 + deer to his credit, Ocho knows the distance and terrain. Choose a round that excells within this window and take your rifle to the range to get it sighted for that round. Then Happy Hunting.

Have a beautiful 9 point I bagged in N MI. many years ago that was gotten with my Dads ( who was already passed ) so effectively my brothers Browning Bar chambered in .270....we had traded guns for the afternoon and he was using my ( also used to be our Dads ) classic Winny Model 94 in 44 mag. The Bar dropped that buck right where he stood!!!!

Madspackler points out something I totally forgot. What ranges do you usually get a shot.......lots of difference if it's 50 yards or like where I hunt out to 400.In the brush I love the 35 Whelen but the old 30-30 holds its own.I have a Marlin 30-30 I use on the river bottom for hogs.........deadly up close and personal.

Paul. I love my BAR. Both my father and I have one. Great guns but they are heavy.

As far as the types of shots, most of them will be from a shooting house over a food plot. We have a few ladder stands in some hardwood bottoms. I don't think he would shoot over 250 yards in plots( some are 400 yards long). Most of the woods you can only see about 100 yards or so.

Thanks for the help guys

.270 and I would recommend the 150gr soft point or ballistic tip...the hollow point expands way to fast, basically separates into fragments. Penetration is always better...but it's all personal preference

Look into a 25-06, it's my personal favorite

I have a Winchester M70 Classic Super Grade, in .338 win mag, with a Leupold vari-x 3 3.5-10 I'd sell him. Ballisticly better than the afore mentioned calibers by a far cry.

I'd recommend 210gr nosler partition, neck sized only, with 73.5 gr of IMR 4350 and cci magnum primers.

Lemme know.

Through out the years I have hunted with .308, 7 Mag, Rem 6MM, Rem 280, 25-06 and .270. My two favorites are the .270 and.280. The .280 is a little better ballistic wise but there was not a wide range of factory loads to select from. That may have changed in recent years but since I gave up hunting six years ago I'm not really up to speed on what is now available for the .280.

If you are primarily hunting whitetails I would highly recommend the .270 and also highly recommend the Nosler 130 gr partition bullet. I'm pretty sure that Federal now offers the 130 gr partition in their Premium line. Some years ago I reloaded all of my rifle ammo and harvested 40 plus bucks using the 130 partition. All but one dropped in their tracks and the one that did not only traveled 50-75 yards.

Regardless of what caliber you select give the Nosler partitions a try.

Did forget to mention that all of the kills with the 130 gr partitions were pass through's with exit wounds the size of a half dollar. This would indicate that the bullet is mushrooming and staying intact as advertised.

It's a shame you taught him to kill any harmless animal.

Sd, a .338 is way more gun than I'm looking for. Thanks for the offer though.

Bogeyboy, that was a joke right? If it was serious..... Hit one with your truck and see how harmless they are. Especially to your wallet. Take a look at the $ amount of damage deer cause to autos.
