Normally I get pretty good customer service from CI., but they really dropped the ball this time.
A cigar I have wanted to buy has been on backorder for some time. Late Thursday night I get an email saying they are in stock. As usual CI tries to be funny and apologizes in the email for the back order but assures they have ensured that "the product you want is in stock and ready to ship, when you want it." Nothing in the notice about limited quantities, need to hurry on this one, etc.
In Las Vegas all week so don't see the email until Friday and can't do anything about it until Saturday. When place the order, the page for this stick says in stock, the order page says in stock and I get a confirmation email that says in stock.
This morning I check to see if I have a tracking number and it says "Backordered" Talked to an unhelpful CR who said "things sell out."
Well, yes they do, but why was it showing on the web page "in stock?" She said they don't update things on the weekend. Well that's pretty pee-poor in this day and age, especially for an outfit like CI, but where then is the notice that you don't update things on the weekend so something that says "in stock" might actually be out? She said my email would have told me it was out of stock.
Ah, but my confirmation email said In Stock. She clearly did not believe me about that until she finally looked it up and hemmed and hawed about I would eventually get notice.
Asked to speak to a supervisor. She couldn't transfer me because they were on the phone. I said I could hold, but she said I couldn't do that. Said someone would call me back.
Did get a call back from a person supposedly a supervisor. She gave a different story. She said they DO update the website on the weekends, but that the confirmation emails get sent out before they actually go and pull the cigars so that, if a mistake was made and they don't have enough stock, the "In Stock" order confirmation has gone out before they really have confirmed YOUR order is in stock.
I told her what the first CR said about no updating and was told the first CR was wrong.
I noted that nowhere on the website or the email does it talk about the "in stock" problem. Nowhere does it note that when it says "in stock" it might not be really in stock because it hasn't been checked yet.
Of course computer glitches can happen and they can get a ton of orders in in a short time but how they handle this is not very good.
My suggestion was not to send out the order confirmation email until, gosh, you know, the order has actually been confirmed. She said she would pass that suggestion along.
