Dallas Police Chief David Brown challenged BLM protesters to fix the problems they see in law enforcement.

"We're hiring. Get off that protest line and put in an application. We'll put you in your neighborhood and help you resolve some of those problems."

Applications are up 344% !

Bravo

Problem solving is preferable to LOL.

Sorry, Frank... most of those people will not clear the first hurdle of the background investigation.

Credit check, psych eval, criminal history check, written test, physical agility test, polygraph, etc... 98.2% won't make it.

While that number is clearly significant on this forum, it is likely very accurate in this instance. I'll bet only 2% of applicants actually become cops.

Does and doesn't apply. If you can't pass all those hurdles, you don't qualify, period. If you're in a field of applicants who passed all those hurdles, then it does.

TW - I get what Frank is saying. The sheriff stirred people up to even look into it, which is good.

yeah, probably better to just continue the way it's been going and keep the cops away from them. Why would either side reach out? Crazy, huh?

The article did say that it had not been determined what percent of applicants were even involved in protesting or what percent were outsiders motivated to heed the call...either way, if you'd like the best force available in an era of police shortages (at least Dallas says they are undermanned), and if you'd like to improve on the horrendous police/citizen relations in large cities...you need to know what the issues are in order to start a "fix".

the police forces are normally short handed or undermanned because of lack of money.. if they found money they'd prolly rehire or hire experienced cops... 😟

I'd say almost non-existent.

In order to get a LEO these days one must overcome many hurdles that are blind to race.

Except for smaller rural agencies, most agencies have physical fitness requirements. If it's a civil service position those requirements aren't waived and they are race neutral. Failure rates are higher than you think.

Usually, the next hurdle is the ability of the agency to have you added to their liability policy. Today most if not all agency insurers require that all applicants pass an extensive psychological profile exam. Except for a handful or so of very, very, very small agencies, without it you won't get hired; no exception. The failure rate for the agency I ended my career with is well over 60%. The failure rate nationally is about the same.

By now, 50-70% of applicants have been weeded out. Usually, there are more positions open than qualified applicants.

Where I served, there are 8 different non-federal LE agencies including the state police which serve that area.. All but one agency has openings. The one that doesn't has the lowest pay scale.

I am not sure it matters how many people make it. The chief called for action. People listened and acted. In my mind that is quite a positive step.
