Want to get a briar pipe. Not sure how best to start. I've looked all over the web, seen a lot of gorgeous pipes I'd love to buy. Thinking of getting one of the make-your-own things, anyone tried one of those? Guidance appreciated.

Should add: just won a tin of pipe baccy, but don't have a thing to smoke it in!

Visit your local B&M if you can, and take a look. Things to check out for include ease of cleaning and shape. There's no sense of getting a beautiful pipe that doesn't smoke well and it's a pain to work with. I would stick with a reliable brand like Peterson or Savinelli first. And for your first briar, I would stay away from those DIY things.

Buy a Missouri Mercheseum Cob and see if you even like pipes, then check back.

Cobs smoke great. I have a dozen briars, none do anything the cobs don't do. 9/10 smoking a MM cob

I'm looking at the cobs right now, probably order in the next few minutes. Anything more on Briar, folks? On tobacco?

Briars?

Look for estate pipes.

Not sure how your shpo operates, but the proprietor of the one I used to frequent would gladly let you try a few samples if you were considering buying a pipe. That being said, I'll second what Z said. Before you invest a dime in a briar pipe make sure it's something you really want to do. I tried pipes and decided it was too much of a pita so my foray was short lived.

^This...................I have over a dozen briars, they rest on a shelf and look pretty.Oh they'll smoke but not half as good as a cob, briars are just too fussy.I have over 2 dozen cobs of which about a dozen are in rotation.I don't care for the smaller cobs with thin walls, they burn too hot.Country Gentleman,Diplomat 5th Avenue or a Diplomat Egg,if you can find one,is my personal preferences.I also have a half dozen acrylic Forever Stems......those little plastic stems that come with the cobs are crap IMO.

If you decide to go the cob route let me know and I'll PM a link to a place that has those acrylic stems for like $5.All you have to do is use a little sand paper to take it down just enough to fit your cob.

Whistle, I'll let you know. The Country Gentleman and the Diplomat were my top two choices, they're everywhere online and they look pretty nice.

Pipes answer the OCD and habit/ceremony side in me, where cigars are the cut it and go, make $h!t happen side. So for me having both works out.

But for others who aren't as dualistic as I am (balanced? No-schizo...) one or the other is probably better.

I'd say get a cob at the local shpo or drugstore before buying a bunch. But if you really get into it, some guys have quickly built a rotation with the seconds package from MM (this may be a competitor reference, so if a lady of CBid spanks me....) is a great deal and good supplies for bombing others.

and there are even more "acquisition disorders" you are about to catch!

I'm all over the place too, that's why I'm excited about the pipes. I've been known to sit and spend and hour peeling a damned orange with my pocket knife just for the ritual. (And the eating of the orange.) I think pipes will fill my need for an even more slowed-down moment in my life. I get too hopped up and stressed out working. Plus, my lady will tell you I prefer things that are, as I call them, pleasantly inconvenient. Should've been born a hundred years ago.

Got a Cob on order.

Coincidentally, a fellow craftsman on Etsy is sending me a gift of one of his handmade pipes. Pretty excited! I'll post a photo when it arrives.
