Finding SWC ammo in .38 special locally is becoming difficult at best.
It's pricey online, even when on sale.
Talked to an old-timer, who said he simply uses a file/rasp, and flattens out the tip of LRN rounds......voila.......a mean-azz home made semi wad-cutter.
I tried it......turned out really good, and only takes about 20 second per round to do a good job.
Since I have a good stash of LRN, I'm going to "convert" a few boxes to home made SWC.

Unrelated but I just got back from the range. I learned I like gold dot better than hornaday critical duty.

Critical DUTY isn't good unless you forsee shooting through a windshield. It over penetrates according to FBI ballistic standards.

I carry 2 mags of Critical Defense, 1 mag of something else you'll never own.

Odd - I was just looking for 38 Spcl wad cutters or SWC just this week. None to be found and no facing on the shelves......

I load my own but there are plenty of commercial loaders that sell reloads or load both of them using new components.

I like 124 gr gold dot. Shot critical defense the other day. It was fine. Im loading 2 mags of gold dot, 1 critical duty.

Gold dot is good stuff. My critical defense is 124 grains, the other mag is the "just in case" stuff. Won't go through six inches of steel like Trolly's. 223 lore, but it will go through some stuff.
