This is such a sad story all around.

Ooof. This is a difficult one for me. She sounds heartless and morally bankrupt for sure, but is that criminal?

I believe we are morally obligated to provide aid to injured people, sure... but legally? They were teens, too. Which one of us as a teen didn't triple dog dare a friend to do something stupid?

I'm declaring a teedub moment. I'm on the fence, here.

Having given this some additional thought... she's culpable. I dare say the vast majority of our laws are based on our societal morality, and she not only did not prevent his death, but encouraged it.

I see where most are coming from here. What she did is morally reprehensible. She's not a nice person. But at the same time, I question if we know where the line is. She didn't pin him into the truck. She just encouraged a decision he had already made.

If an overweight teenager ends up committing suicide and his death note references his inability to be called "fatty", are the bully's to blame? Possibly. But are the legally culpable?

What about the weirdo who breaks and goes and gets a gun? are the students he shoots culpable for their own injuries?

I could go on and on. I think she will have a price to pay in the long run and one that is much different than any court can impose. But, I'm not sure I agree that a law has been broken by her words.

In any case if all she did was encourage the kid's death verbally there shouldn't be a case; However, if the kid was actively in the process of killing himself then she probably should have at least done something. I don't know the case nor do I really care. I just don't think telling someone to kill themselves warrants a jail sentence.

Carter wrote in one message: "I thought you wanted to do this. The time is right and you're ready, you just need to do it!"

"You can't think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don't get why you aren't," Carter wrote on the day of the suicide.

In another text, Carter wrote "you’re finally going to be happy in heaven. No more pain. It’s okay to be scared and it’s normal. I mean, you’re about to die."

Carter also had texted Roy to "get back in" his truck as it filled with carbon monoxide during the suicide attempt.

"This court finds that instructing Mr. Roy to 'get back in' the truck constitutes wanton and reckless conduct by Ms. Carter," the judge said.

He said Carter had a duty to call someone for help when she knew Roy was taking his own life. Yet she did not call the police or Roy's family, the judge said.

"She did not issue a simple additional instruction: Get out of the truck," the judge said.
