Just wanted opinions on the latest offering of irons out there.

The thing that got me wanting new irons was the new Mizuno MP 18s. I went and checked them out a few times, last night the guy let me hit the 9 and the pitching, but I was tired at that point and wasn't hitting them so great... and quickly scrapped my idea of blade P and 9. I did hit the MMC pretty darn well though.

But the clubs I liked most that I tried as the Apex CF-16 (standard version).

Those clubs were so smooth.

Others that I tried that I liked, Titleist AP3 and AP1 (in that order). Also tried the Callaway steel head, the Mizuno MMC flihi... and a couple other that I don't remember.

Anyway, I did the Mizuno fit thing, and it wanted to put me in Project X 6.5 or c-taper 130s...

I tried the 6.5s, but I think my shot dispersion was better with the 6.0s. My flight numbers as far as launch and land angles were pretty good with both. My spin rate he said was a little low, but I think that might be because the worn out beat up balls they have in there (4500 with a 6 iron).

In any case, as it sits right now, I'm thinking the Apex CF-16. The thing that got me most, is I felt one thinking that I hooked the crap out of it, and was only a little left, I was like... waaaaaaat. Just for a tester, I took my club (one I know I can hook the crap out of) and hit a giant hook, it showed as such on the monitor.


So, anyone else got opinions or tried the latest gear out there?

Before shelling out a chit ton of cash for new irons, I picked up a used set of old Titleist AP1s off eBay (not here yet) that have the Project X 6.0's in them so I can try out the shafts on the battlefield.

I figure I should be able to sell the AP1s for close to what I paid for them when I ditch them (or just add them to my ever growing hoard of clubs).

used to play once a week when I started out, got to 97-105 range, sometimes a lot more.

now just play 3 or 4 times a summer, generally on Wild Man Weekend. I keep it in play but don't score well at all.

using same old beat up clubs. I do enjoy iy alot, but would rather go the beach on a nice weekend day.

This all sounds like First World problems to me.

You need to PM Crgcpro to discuss golf clubs. He is the resident expert on these boards. Bart is a great guy who should be able to assist you with this.

I know there are several golf players on this board, was hoping to keep it public. Guess nobody on here has bought clubs in a while (including me).

a while ?? ... yep, not since the 80s ... one of my sons recently looked at my irons and asked if they were from the Jurassic period ... I told him yes, that's when I bought 'em ...

Just kidding, I used to like to go fishing. Actually, I used to like the drinking and eating the fish more than actual fishing.

We all have our hobbies. And you know we'll all talk smack about each others' hobbies.

Truthfully I can't say golf sucks because I have never played, other than mini-golf. It just isn't my kind of leisure activity.

Ya, golf does deserve it's heat though. It takes an incredible amount of patience and practice to be even slightly adept at it.

It's a brutal, evil game where only the sickest of us are willing to punish our selves over it.

bgz, go with what feels the best to you. Call around some local courses and ask what demo clubs they have.
This late in the season they are coming out with 2018. So if you liked a set from this year you should be able to get a deal somewhere. Great idea about picking up a set that has the project x shaft. The shaft is the most important aspect for consistency. The heads are more about what set up to your eye. Blades are sweet but not as forgiving as parameter weighted for off center hits. Check out some demo days in the spring and enjoy your new clubs this fall.

Some solid advice chazbo!

I'm just hoping for the best with my tester set I have coming (it'll be here before the weekend!).

I wanted something that would be in a similar class to what I was looking at (game improvement irons... but not of the super gi variety).

I think the older AP1s I have coming with the project x 6.0s should be a quality tester set, plus in general, they got pretty good reviews back when they came out.

A fitter told me a story about a guy who was a really good hitter on the launch monitors. Even though the guy was hitting just short of pro - he kept wanting to test super game improvement clubs. Not the regulars, not the blades. The fitter asked him why and he said “I play for money”.

I play a set of Ping Karstens, green dot. They are ultra super game improvement cavity backs. They work great - even on days when I don’t. The current replacement is the G Max.
