Um... Paul, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a few other 49ers joined him and even a few members of other teams joined in last year. 49er safety Eric Reid comes to mind.

Now, it didn't get crazy like it is now until Trump was elected and worsened after he stated that the kneelers should be fired.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday any player who disrespects the flag will not play.

Jones’ comments, the strongest made on the anthem controversy, came after he was asked about Vice President Mike Pence leaving the game in Indianapolis early after several San Francisco 49ers players took a knee during the national anthem.

"I know this, we cannot ... in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag," he said following the Cowboys’ 35-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers. "We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we're clear."

I'm fine not watching. Of course if the fishing were better this time of year it would be easier.

ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" host Michael Wilbon compared Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to a slaveowner after Jones all but banned players from protesting during the national anthem.

Jones said that, in the wake of continued demonstrations, players who disrespect the flag will not play in that game.

Wilbon's co-host Tony Kornheiser voiced his concern that key players like quarterback Dak Prescott or wideout Dez Bryant could force Jones to bench them if they were to protest.

"I believe he has the right to do that as an employer," Kornheiser said, adding that he dismissed Miami Dolphins owner Dennis Ross' new rule that protesting players must stay in the tunnel during the anthem.

But, Wilbon objected to Jones' actions outright.

"The word that comes to mind, and I don't care who doesn't like me using it, is 'plantation'," he said. "The players are here to serve me, they will do what I want no matter how much I pay them."

"They are not equal to me. That’s what this says to me and to mine," Wilbon said, imitating what he assessed as Jones' thoughts.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday wrote a letter to all 32 league owners regarding the protests that have taken place during the national anthem, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

In the letter, which Schefter shared on his Facebook page, Goodell wrote that the “current dispute over the National Anthem is threatening to erode the unifying power of our game, and is now dividing us, and our players, from many fans across the country.”

Last year, former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat down and later took a knee during the playing of the national anthem as protest against racial injustice. More players have joined the protests and President Donald Trump spoke out against the activity in September and has continued to do so.

Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters has sat during the playing of the national anthem at every game this season.
