My neighbors kid shot a Blue Jay and I rescued it from him. Seems he was struck in the shoulder. A glancing blow I would say. The bird was a bit limpid so I wrapped him up in an old tee shirt an put water and some whole wheat bread and wild bird seed close by. 5 days now and the bird is one hopping mother Fu-ker. Eating, drinking, pooping. Healthy except for the wing I suspect is still pretty sore. Any advice as to what I could feed him that would be more nutritional?

If you are able, take some earthworms and break it into small pieces. You can also do this with small "soft" bugs. Mash it a little in your finger and hand feed. Be sure not to do this for too long though, when the bird is able to get around better it will need to remember how to do it himself.

Thanks for the advice I'll try that. Problem is, the bird gets around real good right now. I don't like chasing it just to feed it. Sucker can really hop and scawk. I'll put the worms and bugs in a dish. It's been eating out of a dish for nearly a week now. He's gonna make it. Very lively bird. Bits pretty hard too.

I am glad to hear it is doing well. I think a dish will work just fine.

The Blue Jays around here will pick through the bird feeder for peanuts.

My wife rescued a baby robin once. She fed the thing baby food from a dropper at first. When the bird was older she fed it earthworms.
