Squatter camps along the Santa Anna river.

Homelessness is a severe problem in nearly every California city...there's talk in LA about using trailers to house the homeless to reduce the numbers of tents along many downtown streets and freeway underpasses, in addition to those along riverbeds.

I see those every morning when I drop the woman off in Oakland. Much more dense than that, built up on the roads under the overpass and BART. The encampments are much denser though, no space between tents (or makeshift tent from tarps) and they take up the entire sidewalk and frequently one lane of traffic as well. I'm not kidding, the tent entrances are right at the edge of the sidewalk, so to keep from getting hit by traffic when they get out of their tent, they put a couple orange cones in the street. Then, as weeks go by with no traffic in that lane they start throwing trash/junk/bikes in the lane until the entire lane of traffic is just detritus .

Every now and then one of the tents will burn down, so you'll see a charred sidewalk between two tents.

I was thinking of heading out there on a weekend to take photos, but didn't want to waste my day. They've cleaned up the area I'm driving through this past week, moved them a few blocks up... so it will be a little while until it builds up again.

I was out there over the holidays and could’ve sworn it seemed like a whole tent city set up in the parking lot of the Angels baseball stadium.

Well, if all the wealthy hardcore left coast elites want to re-distribute their wealth, this would be a good place for them to open their wallets.

Wait, they want to re-distribute other people's wealth, not theirs, nm, won't work.

when in San Diego a year ago November, the number of homeless was a real eye opener.
I'm sure the weather makes it a magnet for those living in the streets, many would have died without shelters in Boston this Winter, and yet many refuse the help.

Startling how the number increased when budget cuts forced closings of State Mental Hospitals.

For years at the Airport, especially during winter, the homeless will take the Marta train from downtown to the airport. It’s a big building, with conditioned air, food & water, and offers lots of mischief for the so inclined. Airport Police would always round them up & boot them out of the airport every day at 6am. “Would”, being past-tense.

Supposedly one of the Atlanta homeless shelters recently closed. I had been wondering why there was a spike in homeless sightings lately. The amount of “crazy” has spiked, too. Apparently the outgoing mayor has instructed airport police to keep a hands-off policy.

Just last week Airport Police were called because a woman took a dump curbside by the skycap counter. She was seen in the back of a cruiser being driven away. A few hours later, she came dancing by our “first class” ticket counter, singing, “Nah ne Nah ne Nah, Nah”.

Thanks, Kasseem !!

Many of the homeless in California have migrated from other parts of the country, where the climate and hospitality is less "favorable," including from states where the people look down upon CA for our homeless problem...some are victims of the Great Recession who haven't been able to recover...

I read an article by a social worker who has studied the homeless...many choose the lifestyle once they've endured it for awhile...

some compassionate CA cities are trying to find alternative housing among many solutions to help the homeless, while other intolerant CA cities choose a law enforcement response by ordering the homeless to move or be arrested for trespassing or loitering and ultimately results in the confiscation and/or destruction of property...those evicted end up at the more compassionate places...

kind of ironic how one of the wealthiest places in the world can't muster the compassion to help some of its neediest poor people...but the more I hang out with cons, the more I'm starting to hate the homeless...I've stopped throwing coins into the hands of the hoboes who hang out at freeway exits...

A fun story...

So SF of course has a mess of a homeless problem. Also has a parking issue...

My father was visiting over thanksgiving, and one afternoon the woman, my father and I were going for Pho. Now the best pho restaurants are in the TL, one of the classically bad neighborhoods. We used to live in this neighborhood, until we moved 2 years ago.

So we circle around the area of the restaurant and finally find a parking spot. But there' a homeless dude sitting on the curb there, sleeve rolled up, elastic around his bicep and a needle in his elbow. But, there was no other parking, so I edged the car halfway into the spot to hold it, and we all sat there and waited in the car while he verrryyyy slowly finished shooting up and moved off the curb.

Informative article about the problem with a proposed possible solution:
something called Housing First.

For around $46 a year per person they claim homelessness could be eradicated (?)

Work in a jail for a week. These 'homeless' people are usually drug addicts whose own families have had enough of their bs and don't want them around anymore. You want a homeless shelter built anywhere around where you live?

I don't.

Ya right. I'd rather be the president of the Hillary Clinton fan club than the guy in charge of fixing this. But it's getting worse.
Can hardly walk a block in nyc without seeing people sleeping on the sidewalk.
Don't do anything about it and it's just going to get worse.

Exactly. There’s shelters out there and churchs will help get you pointed in the right direction, but the problem is many of these people are drunks/addicts and won’t follow the house rules.
