She was a gorilla, born and raised in captivity, and was celebrated for her ability to communicate in a modified version of American sign language, knowing over 1,000 signs and was said to understand over 2,000 words.

Just read a couple of articles about koko. Saw footage too.
She was asked 'where do we go after we die' and answered 'comfortable hole bye'

Really interesting experiment. We've learned a lot about thoughts and sensitivities of other animals because of koko.

I thought that by far, the most amazing and fascinating thing that came from this gorilla was the ability to form thoughts ... she didn't just memorize signs, she had the ability to think about them and expand on them ....

Some years ago, she took interest in a ring that her teacher was wearing ... but, she had no sign for "ring" and when asking about it, called it a "finger bracelet" ...

Now, THAT is mind blowing

Many animals have more cognitive ability than we give them credit for.
