so...why do we use the 50/50 solution in our humidors?

I thought it was to inhibit mold growth on the sponge, or, as a way to deprive us of our hard earned cash

do any of you "mix your own"?

Peter, it helps to keep a constant humidity level. It absorbs moisture out of the air or releases it depending on the conditions.

I usually just use distilled water but lately it's been very humid (more than usual) here in Houston and I need something to keep things properly balanced.

I have mixed my own, but that is because I work in a chemistry lab. Yes there are plenty of hazards that come with PG, but my suggestion would be to not get any on your cigar. Thats just common sense though.

I limit myself to a shot glass on Friday nights, so I don't think it's enough to hurt me. LoL
Seriously though, I just thought it was interesting about how many places and things that PG is being used in. And how it is basically unregulated (grandfathered)in it's use.

I save alot by buying PG at my local drugstore ($8.95/pt.) and mixing it with distilled H2O myself. When you have a dozen humies, you looks for ways to save $. Then again, this may explain the voices I keep hearing. "Bid, Bid!!!"

if you are putting rolled up leaves in your mouth and lighting the end and drawing the smoke into your mouth, i don't think any hazard of pg would matter
