Funny....I first heard of that on Morning Edition maybe 5-6 weeks ago. It did sound like something for me.....I think the interviewee fasted from like 11PM to 4PM....something like that....and then ate whatever from 4-11. There was some scientific sounding mumbo jumbo accompanying the story that seemed to make sense, but I haven't looked into it

If you want to learn about intermittent fasting, check out the You Tube videos by Thomas DeLaur. Really good stuff. On my fasting days, I usually fast from 6PM to 12 Noon. In the morning I'll have an apple cider vinegar and lime juice drink and black coffee. Neither will break your fast. I usually break my fast with Bone Broth followed by a salad with a home made full fat dressing (blue cheese or Caesar), and a Keto coffee afterwards. I did an 18 hour fast last night/this morning, and was going to do another one tonight/tomorrow, but I'm not hungry for dinner. I'm thinking of holding out till 1PM tomorrow and making it a 24 hour fast. After 16 hours is when you get the most benefits from fasting.

There's a radical twist to intermittent fasting called One Meal a Day. The folks who do this, do it 7 days a week. Way to radical for me.

Good for you. Good news is those 7 lbs. where probably mostly water gain.

We did Atkins 20 back in 2003, and after the weight loss switched to Atkins Maintanace. Kept the weight off for 10 years until my food allergies caused me to jump ship. Keto seems to be better for my allergies and there are some studies that suggest that over time it may allow your body to heal leaky gut syndrome (the cause of my food allergies).

You have to do a minimum 16 hours up to 24 (past that the body can go into starvation mode which isn’t good). It works by pushing the body to produce HGH up 20 times normal and that is what makes it work. It was recommended to do twice a week as it’s pretty easy that way but you can do it 7 days a week if you want to.....the doctor I listened to said the two days a week was what he usually recommends because it’s something people can easily stick with it.

I tried keto for a couple months. Keto flu only lasted a day or so for me and I dropped 10 lbs pretty fast.

I need to lose about 12 to get to 180 again, but I had a hard time planning out a variety of meals with the keto diet. I was eating the same stuff.

You got a recommendation for meal plans, David? Like a recipe book or something?

Recipes are all over You-Tube, but we keep it simple.

First thing in the morning, 2 TBL. apple cider vinegar, 2 TBL. lime juice and Erythritol to taste.

Breakfast - 1 or 2 eggs and maybe some avocado or bacon followed by a Keto coffee.

Lunch - Salad with a protein and full fat dressing. Followed by maybe some Macadamia nuts or Pecans, or Lilly's stevia sweetened chocolate. I make a couple home made salad dressing (blue cheese and Caesar) using Mayo made from avocado oil. Soy oil is poison and Canola oil is inflammatory. Sometimes I'll mix it up with a chicken or sardine salad on home made keto bread.

Dinner - Usually a protein along with broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, etc. Sometimes home made pizza on Keto crust, home made chili (no beans), some Keto Mexican casserole, or no sugar added tomato sauce baked over green beans with a ton of cheese.

Fat bombs for in-between snacks, though I rarely eat these.

Finally another apple cider vinegar drink about 1 hour before bed.

As Jamie suggested, look into adding intermitent fasting to the mix. Not only does it reset your blood sugar, but produces HGH after 16 hours. It also helps with hunger and cravings. I'm currently on hour 26 and not a bit hungry. I'll be breaking my fast in a couple hours (dinner time) but I'll have to force myself to eat. I usually break a long fast with organic bone broth (grass fed beef or free range chicken), followed by a high fat meal an hour later.

I agree with the majority of what you said, except the 24 hour thing. Most of the studies I've researched show that you don't lose non-fat mass (muscles, etc.) until 36 to 48 hours in. One thing you didn't touch on is Autophagy. Autophagy is when your healthy, strong cells consume weak, old and defective cells, which greatly rejuvenates the body. Autophagy does not kick in till around hour 16, but it will continue for 72 hours and more. There's the crux. If you fast over 36 to 48 hours, you get the benefit of additional Autophagy, but you also lose some non-fat mass. To some, the trade off is worth the benefits. Just FYI.

Personally, I stay well under the 36 hour mark, as I can not afford to lose the little muscle I have (lol). 18 to 20 hours seems to be my sweet spot, though I just broke a 28 hour fast.

David

Edited to add: After a bunch more research on Autophagy, I want to clarify a couple things. IF you are in ketosis (burning fat for fuel instead of carbs), Autophagy will usually kick in somewhere between hour 12 and 16 of a fast. If you are consuming a regular American high carb diet, it can take 72 hours plus. Besides overall rejuvenation, Autophagy cleans up plague in the brain which can help prevent dementia and Alzheimer's. It will also tighten skin cells so that you don't have flabby skin after weight loss. I have read a couple doctors who have stated that Autophagy is so beneficial, that they sometimes recommend a 4 to 7 day fast, as the benefits far outweigh the loss of lean body mass. FYI

Thanks, Jaime and David. I read the first few Google hits on IF and decided to jump right in. Daily 8-16 seemed like easiest to fit into my lifestyle and lack of self control (or lack of commitment, maybe.)
Anyway, on Day3 and is pretty easy transition...though I do get a bit antsy ..the 14th and 15 hours. I picked 10PM-2PM, will probably move it left 30 min or an hour...no clue how long it will last but I do believe it will be good

Dave, the more I research this, the more I'm convinced that there are extreme advantages to an extended fast, once a month or once a quarter. These are fasts are of 72 to 168 hours. Not only is Autophagy kicked into overdrive during these extended fasts, but all your white blood cells die off, forcing the body to produce new ones. In other words, you get a brand new, enhanced immune system after an extended fast. One doctor was encouraging her 70 - 80 year old patients to do extended fasts. She reported that they looked and felt much younger after the fast.

One other study I found interesting. When folks usually lose an excessive amount weight (100, 200, 300 lbs.) they are left with sheets of lose hanging skin, that requires surgery to remove. Those who lost excessive weight doing low carb/keto along with fasting, had their skin shrink along with the fat. Autophagy would actually devour the excessive skin cells and tighten the skin.

I'm actually doing research on the Carnivore diet, which seems to be the next evolution after Keto. It's exactly what it sounds like. All food and fat is animal sourced. Surprisingly, humans tend to be healthier on an all animal diet, then ones that contain vegetables, grains and fruit. I know it goes against everything we have been taught, but the research is there. On a side note, there are many videos on You-Tube of 10 - 20 year Vegans, who went Carnivore and saw a tremendous improvement in their health. I'm not ready to go Carnivore yet, but I may down the road.
