No, Jamie, you can use any pistol of .38 caliber or larger. I haven't shot in years and really need to get a bunch of practice in. I'll be practicing with my HS2000 (pre-Springfield XD), and my Turkish military CZ-75 as I remember both of them being nail drivers. I do have a match grade custom 1911 that I inherited from my dearly departed brother, but I've never fired it. I'll start my wife off with a 5" S&W 66 with .38 Special Cowboy loads, and then see how she handles the semi-autos. For carry I'm leaning toward my Glock 27 (sub-compact .40), and we'll be looking for a small hammerless revolver for her, as she finds semi-autos "confussing". One plus about an NC CCW, is that the last time I checked, they had reciprocal agreements with 38 states. If I'm not mistaken, that's the most of any state.

We went to the indoor range yesterday and decided to join. After talking to the range master, I found out that the shooting qualification for the class we signed up for was arbitrary and super tight. NC requirements is an approximate 12" x 18" milk bottle target. 10 rounds at 3', 10 at 15 'and 10 at 21'. 21 of 30 in the black. Heck, my wife and I could do that in our sleep scoring 30 out of 30. The range master said that some of these "tactical training" companies set up ridiculous requirements expecting you to fail, and then pay them for additional training in an attempt to pass the next class (which again you have to pay for). I have no problem with becoming extremely proficient, but I feel we've been conned, as the class required a non-refundable full payment in advance. I was so excited about getting into a "quickly filling" class, that I failed to do my normal research. Oh, well, live and learn. We'll probably bite the bullet and sign up for the class at our range, as I don't want to waste 10 hours on a Saturday with the possibility that we could fail the arbitrary super tight shooting requirements and have to take the whole class over again. Yesterday, before we knew of the actual state requirements, we where practicing at 30' and putting all shots on paper with about 40% in a 5" circle so we may be able to pass their " designed to fail" requirements, but I'm pissed and feeling taken advantage of.
