My wife is out of town visiting relatives, so I'm home alone. Yesterday I needed to retrieve something from our RV (30' 5th wheel). I shut the door behind me, retrieved the item, but when I pulled on the door handle to leave, I heard something snap inside the door. The door handle broke internally, and the door would not open. I don't have my phone and I'm too far away from neighbors to yell for help. First I look around for a screw driver to take the handle apart. No such luck. Then I take a kitchen knife and try to pry back the striker. Not enough clearance to get it in. Then I remember that there is an emergency fire escape window up in the master bedroom (the highest part of the 5th wheel. All other windows are either fixed glass, or have a tiny crank out vent. The bedroom window is my only choice. I remove the screen and disconnect the bottom latch. The window is hinged from the top, but something is stuck and I can't remove it. That means I will have to fight against the free swinging window to make my escape. I put one leg out the window, but there is not enough room to swing the other leg out, as the window only measures 30" wide x 20" high. Finally I lay face down on the bed, push myself out feet first, grab the window frame, lower myself, and drop the final 3' to 4' to the ground. The whole time the swinging window is smacking me on my back, the back of my head and my arms.

Not bad for a 62 year, old fart. I'm so glad my wife and I went Keto, as my former, much heavier self probably wouldn't have made it out the window.

Oh boy...

I'm sorry, but that would have been much funnier on video.

Hope there are screws on the outside for the door latch. Otherwise you're gonna need a ladder and go back in the same way you came out.

The handle still works from the outside, so that's not a problem. I just ordered a replacement from Amazon.

About now that cheapie 101 pc tool set in the plastic container sounds like it might find it's way into the RV:-"

Funny story.

My bigass would have had to kick the door down. Glad you got out relatively unscathed.

This would have been even funnier if you couldn't call or email for help but you had Internet access only to this forum for help. You would have got a lot of interesting advice

I think I probably would've taken the opportunity to have myself a nap.

Just think, it would be hours before anyone came to disturb you. And with the door broken, would've taken a few more.
