I am aging cigars for 5 years. Using a boveda pack and wrung-out wet bits of paper towel that I have been replacing every week (the paper towel bits, not the boveda pack) and I am storing them in an airtight zipper bag on a shelf in the basement. I am already salivating at the thought of unzipping the bag and lighting them up in 2025.

I'd wrap them in the wet paper towel and take them out of the bag. Put them in a sock and store in the top drawer of your wife's dresser, better results imo.

If you keep the submerged in water they stay hydrated better. FYI.

In fact, I sous vide all my cigars.

Kzoo, you've embarked on a noble endeavor.
Please skip the paper towel bits as they will add 100% humidity to the cigars. The bovedas will serve to dry up the towel bits and therefore not put out the RH listed on the pack. If it's worth 5 years of your time do it right, just keep the bovedas from becoming rocks by replacement or recharging as needed and you'll be fine. Ask your local tobaconist for a couple cedar blocks to add to the bag as well if possible.
Either way please keep us apprised to your endeavors and yes, you must list in detail the cigars you're aging for our careful consideration

In all seriousness, what do you guys look for in a cigar to decide to buy a box and stash them away for months or years? What basis do you use to pick the starting cigar?

I don't intentionally stash cigars. I've just happened to acquire enough that I can't get to them all in a timely fashion

Well, if this noob hasn't written us off yet, my suggestion is to buy a plastic tub with a decent seal and put the cigars to be aged in it. Add a container with about 1/4 cup of beads and humidify to a stable 65%. Check every couple of weeks and if the humidity holds and if you are not going to open the tub, reduce the checking to longer intervals between. You could add some cedar if desired and bovedas, but the humidity should be good for 6 months or longer.

While you are waiting for the cigars to age you could buy and read my book "How to Train a Seal at Home".
