lifetime fishing permit for 65+ in CA is $562...already wasted two years...doubt if it'll be worth it for me...

Bottom fishing can be a little fun... but pulling fish off the bottom is like reeling in a bucket of water. Not a lot of fight to it, just a lot of pulling.

I like the fight of the pelagic fish... the back and forth of it. The initial run, the taking back some line, then the next run, etc... all the while wondering if the big mutha fugga is gonna break your line or spit the hook.

Fair warning though, once you clean your own salmon you might not eat salmon anymore... If there's a species of fish more prone to parasitic worms, I'm not familiar with it...

Yep. I used to love smoked salmon and it's my wife's favorite fish. We bought a really nice sized full filet. I mixed up my signature brine and put the fish in it, covered it up and stuck it in the fridge. I pulled it out to warm before going on the smoker, and voila'.
