Some thoughts I found on this idea to discuss



"Here are some simple facts:

a) Police almost never stop a crime before or during the crime. That is why we keep shouting the mantra, “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.”

b) Police often fail to identify criminals and arrest them after the fact. Reference Chicago police only solving about 10% of murders in the city.

c) If police are largely non-existent in urban enclaves, neighborhoods will police themselves and stop brutal thugs, child molesters, rapists, and murderers.

d) If police are largely non-existent in urban enclaves and if neighborhoods are unwilling or unable to proactively stop violent criminals, those violent criminals will soon meet their demise when a victim is stronger, faster, better prepared, or just plain lucky. Reference the average life expectancy of gang-bangers being about 23 years old.

e) Regardless of policing levels or effectiveness, more and more urban enclaves are implementing “no cash bail” and turning criminals loose the same day or, worse, refusing to prosecute “petty” crimes. Thus, the prosecution half of our criminal justice system is totally failing.

f) There is effectively no policing (as in none, zero) in huge rural areas and there are no rampant crime problems, especially heinous violent crimes.

Those are facts. Together they tell me that policing is almost entirely ineffective and unnecessary. Why not defund police in urban enclaves and empower local people to care for themselves — something that “people of the gun” have been promoting forever?

And before anyone tries to dismiss the fact that local people will “take out the trash” when police are largely non-existent, ask yourself a simple question. If police are largely non-existent, your neighbor three doors down savagely beats another neighbor, then robs another neighbor, and then rapes your daughter, would you just shrug your shoulders and accept that your violent neighbor is a fact of life? Or would you (or another neighbor) say “enough!” and take out the trash?

Government pretty much always fails at pretty much everything government does. Policing is no different. Why keep paying for something that is almost entirely ineffective and almost entirely unnecessary anyways?

My apologies to active and retired law enforcement officers who take offense at the above facts and conclusion. I imagine most of you mean well. Sometimes, reality is harsh and hard to accept."

We don't need to defund the police. We need them.

We do need to hold them not just to the same laws as civilians, but to a higher standard. They are supposed to be examples.

But how do you fix the "might makes right" and "we are the good guys, so we can cheat" mentality in the police force and legal system?

We got way too much of "the ends justify the means" thinking in the whole justice system.

And the fact that we allow the POTUS to be so far, far above the law sets the worst possible example.

I'm willing to sit on the sidelines with a large bowl of popcorn and watch how it plays out. I'm also glad I'm not living there for this experiment.

I hope it happens.

We'll let Minneapolis be the living petrie dish for this experiment.

Have to admit, when I first heard about it I had to look it up because I didn't believe it. Then I kinda chuckled and thought this is going to be fun to watch. Almost as fun as watching the Metrodome collapse in the winter.

I realize it's a completely different thing but I live in a small, rural Missouri with a small police force. We also have a County Sheriff's force. Our city force is useless and unneeded. Recently, I witnessed a small fender bender between a couple of neighbors. Police were called and I went out to give a statement. The cop handed me a piece of paper and told me to "write my statement and drop it off at the Sheriff's Dept." Write my statement? I told the cop he could use his cell phone or body camera to record my statement but I wasn't gonna do his job for him. 90% of the time, cops are useless and generally make things worse.

Kinda been my experience that negative reinforcement serves as a deterrent. Whether it's a ticket, a time-out or an ass beating. Without LE I would expect an increase in crime as well as accidents. Of course you could save money on traffic signs and signals as they would eventually become unnecessary as no one would treat them with any regard.

I'm with Brewha. Where I live we have State Police and a resident State Trooper. It once was a pitiful excuse for policing, but in the last decade it has become much better. The book - A Death in Canaan is an example of the old guard and the only one still looking for the murderer(s) is Peter Reilly.

Break the police unions strangle hold. Take it all the way to SCOTUS, their contracts are plain wrong. I would like a ruling on their constitutionality.

Which do you want to go all the way, their contracts or their unions?

I think the single largest contributor to this problem has been the union.

Most of us agree that most cops are not evil. But the union supports the few bad ones and helps keep them safe. Think Catholic church and pedophile priests.

I feel that part of that complaint would be considered crime prevention, something that is most successful in countries with governments under which we would never consider living...think military control, totalitarianism, etc.

We generally accept the risk of freedom to be free from that type of security force. It's why we don't say To Prevent, Protect, and Serve.

Also, it is impossible to assess crime totals that actually are prevented such as through cultivated informants, undercover work and the like.
And just about every day local news in most areas covers cops chasing and apprehending thieves on foot and in cars moments after the crime was committed.

Ironically, I am not the world's biggest booster of police, but in general my dealings have been mostly positive and I have a lot more concerns about the inferred, return to The Wild West I am picking up in this thread.
