I was in LE for 10 years, not so long ago but long ago enough that we could do our jobs the way they needed to be done.
I think what happened to GF was abhorrent. I am dumbfounded as to what that officer was thinking.
I agree that the unions generally have a "defend all actions at all costs" mentality. I think this stems form a real lack of purpose on their part. They charge dues, the members expect something in return besides a contract negotiation every 6 years.
I will also offer to anyone who who has not done so to contact your local PD and go for a ride along. Not a "6AM-2PM on a Tuesday" ride along, but ride on a midnight shift in the crappy part of town. At the worst, it will confirm your opinions, but at the best, you may gain some appreciation of the job.
99.99% of all the cops I worked with were good people who just wanted to do the job, help people out, take out the garbage and make the world a little better. Nothing any of us hated more than a cop who made us look bad or made our jobs harder.
Instead of decreasing funding to an overworked and underpaid profession, maybe it's time to increase their funding and actually recruit and pay the right candidates for the job and train them the way you want them to behave.
Also, I am not even going to dignify the original poster's "facts" with a response...
