No, it's not the COVID. The largest wildfire in the nation right now is burning through the Upland Sororan Desert northeast of Phoenix about 40 miles. This is some of the most beautiful and diverse wilderness in Arizona and actually in the world. This wilderness area runs from around 2000 ft elevation desert terrain all the way up to 7000 ft Pine and Oak forests in the Mazatzal mountains. So far it has burned over 186,000 acres and is only about 20% contained.

I'm sure many who don't know much about the desert think it's just a desolate place but this area is thick with thousands of types of vegetation found only in this area and home to hundreds of different animals well-adapted to it. I have spent over 50 years hiking, backpacking, exploring, fishing and hunting in this area and it has always felt like my 2nd home. It will eventually regenerate but not in my lifetime.

Wildfire is part of nature but this one is human caused by some MF idiot I assume by accident.

I think they said it was started by a car fire...

I cannot imagine being one of the fire crews working this thing in 110 degree heat and then the fire and the gear on top of that... Those guys/girls are tough.

they are in CA...not sure about AZ...visited that area many years ago...tragic loss...

equivalent to the numerous fires that devastated Yosemite during the past 15 years

The fire is now about 60% contained. Gonna be 110-111F the next few days.

A guy I worked with had been a fire hotshot in his younger days and had many stories. On one wildfire he and three others were dropped off by helicopter on a rocky outcrop in the forest to do fire breaks. As the helicopter lifted off and the noise and wind died down he said there was this buzzing all around them. Turns out they were in the middle of a rattlesnake den.
