OK, I've got a question. I've always taken discolored cellos to be a sign of extensive aging.

Recently I opened a box of mixed smokes that I hadn't gotten into for about a year or so. The cellos on some, Diesels specifically, are heading towards opaque. Others, Punch Signatures, are as clear as the day I got them. I've got other ones in other containers a year or two older than that also clear.

So what gives? There have to be other factors that play into cello yellowing. Is it related to wrapper type? Maybe the Diesels weren't as aged from manufacture so offgassed more than the others? I'm looking for you science minded types to clue me in

It means oils went from your cigar to the cello and the cigar lost some of it's punch. Personally, I prefer my oils in the cigar... so I try to smoke them before that happens.

Makes sense, but wouldn't the oils dry out at a similar rate, or is was it just that much more to start with in the Deisels?

Heat, ammonia off gassing, the quality / manufacture of the cellophane itself.

Years ago, I put a bunch of random empty cello sleeves, including some that had never been used on a cigar, into some tupperware containers. One container had a small ramekin of ammonia, another I left in a warm place, last was one with both ammonia and heat. Left them sealed for a few months, they call came out yellowed/browned to some degree. The heat & ammonia container being the most yellowed. Based on texture and thickness, it was pretty obvious there were different manufacturers or different formulas / specs between them. Within every container there was some uniformity with the cellos that came from the same source, but there was variation in the yellowing from one manufacturer's cello sleeve to another.

I've seen some fresh cigars with somewhat yellow cello and guess that the cello is a slightly different formulation.

As TG has explained, the cello will yellow with or without the cigars. So it's not the "oils" as some suggest.
A yellow cello (damn you Delta and that song) will indicate that the cigar has some age, but zero indication of whether it's been aged properly. In fact, if TG's experiment is accurate (and I never doubt TG) then heat exacerbates the process so a yellow hue can indicate too high temps.
The yellowing is just a color shift that indicates the product is degrading. A thicker film would resist this better than a thin one, all else being equal.

I have worked with cellulose based polymers, but never with cellophane itself. The only property worthy of mention is it's ability to be impervious to almost everything except water vapor. So age away.
