I just steamed the biggest ones I have ever seen. Each had a diameter of five+ inches and stems with diameters of one inch. Found them at the Walmart Neighborhood Market.

We have been buying a lot of produce there for the last several months because both the quality and price are very nice. Often cheaper then even Super Walmart, Aldi, Costco and Publix, with quality being the same or better. Many of the same brands as Costco and Publix.

The only downside would be a few circumstances where the selection is smaller (like only five kinds of apples as opposed to 10 or so varieties at Publix).

They are tasty with drawn butter or cold marinated artichoke hearts in a salad.

My mother used to make them bu baking in the oven with a sauce that may have had some bread crumbs. I've never made any myself. Artichoke hearts are pretty much a requirement if I make an antipasto.

The wife is an artichoke lover of the first order, dips them in straight mayo. I like 'em but can't get into the leaf dipping thing. Just the hearts in a salad or whatever and I'm good.

Before moving to South Carolina we lived in the SF bay area and my work took me to the Monterey peninsula a couple of times a month. This little work run always included a stop at Pezzini Farms in Castroville (The artichoke capitol of the world) on the way home.

In the 5 plus years we've been here finding decent artichokes has been hit or miss until we got a Sprouts store in 2018. Then a year or so later the Walmart neighborhood market started carrying them regularly. So now the wife is a happy camper, which means I am a happy camper, and she can enjoy her "arti-gags" regularly.
