Tl;dr conservative nutjobs are buying $500 "freedom phones" which are in fact rebranded, Chinese-made phones that typically sell for around $150 and I guarantee at least 2 people on this forum own one...

Trump prolly doesn't approve, since he isn't getting a cut of the scam.

It is very hard to be sure you are buying American. I try to, but you would need a cut sheet on every component of the product.

If your trying to by a true American made phone, you'll have to get a land line and shop on e-bay for legacy phones. Get a cool rotary one.

Nearly all cell phones are made and/or assembled in China, Taiwan, South Korea. US companies design them but the components are made by Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC), Sony...

Although the likes of Apple, AMD, Nvidia create the design/architecture of their chips and phones they don't have the capabilities to actually manufacture them. They farm it out to a 3rd parties in the China region like Taiwan Semiconductor (the worlds largest chip maker, something like 70% of all chips are made by them). Assembly of iPhones is done in Shenzen, China.

Intel is the only company, off the top of my head, that does soup to nuts on design and manufacture of chips. They recently announced that they are building another plant or two in the US. Samsung also has semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and I think they are expanding here in the US to help with supply and get around US-China relations issues (similar to what First Solar did for solar panel tariffs in latter part of the 20-teens).

Demand is high for chips but the capacity to fill the demand is not there right now. It will take a few years for Intel and Samsung to get the plants built and running. TSMC is probably the best bet short term to fill supply but they need to stoke the fires and get going again after the COVID shut down.

iPhone processor chips are made by Taiwan Semiconductor, the screens made by Samsung and a company in China called BOE, the cameras are made by Sony, the RAM is made by Samsung... and so on. There is no pure play US manufacturer of cell phones.

https://www.apple.com/supplier-responsibility/pdf/Apple-Supplier-List.pdf

I think Samsung does most of it's manufacturing in Vietnam and outsources some to China and India.

Motorola's cell phone division was bought by Google back in the early 20-teens then sold to Lenovo (Chinese company) a few years later.
