pretty sure the protection of unvaccinated people is the goal here...our millions of children are ineligible for vaccines....it's better to be safe than sorry...

lotta people like to drink and get drunk, or drive their cars at 120 plus MPH...the mandate against driving when drunk, and reckless speeding are reasonable and accepted limitations of individual freedoms that protect innocent people

unlike the regular flu, we don't have any great treatment for severe cases of covid...I don't remember a flu season that's been so bad, that it swamped hospitals across the nation, let alone the world...

I think this must be like a typical California progtard solution to make its subject proles safer.
The virus must be a greater danger than the rampant crime going on in San Francisco.

CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK
Models: State case peak may be days away

Orlando Sentinel

Florida is rapidly approaching the peak of new infections of the delta wave, when the highest single-day counts could come, according to two models created by researchers at Florida universities.

One model created by University of South Florida researchers predicts the state will hit the most daily infections by Aug. 24, bringing about 23,000 that day, said Dr. Edwin Michael. Because the delta variant has infected so many unvaccinated people, and more than 66% of Floridians have been immunized, he said the state will likely hit herd immunity in early September.

If immunity gained from infection proves to be long-lasting — though research has indicated it offers shorter protection than that of the vaccine — and if vaccines hold, Michael said the pandemic could end by early next year.
“If immunity is long term, this will be the last significant wave,” he said, noting “flare-ups” could still occur. “There’s a lot of caveats to this.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people who have been infected and recovered from COVID-19 should still get vaccinated.

If you have had COVID-19 before, please still get vaccinated,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the CDC Director, said this month after the findings of a study showing unvaccinated people are two times more likely to be reinfected.

A University of Florida model predicts a similar timeline, projecting a peak to come at the end of last week or sometime next week, said Dr. Ira Longini, a biostatistician who helped develop it. The model, updated Aug. 14, predicts a more severe summit at about 33,000 cases in a single day, or 150 cases per 100,000 residents, according to a report published by the school.

But hospitalizations and deaths spike days and weeks after symptoms arise, Florida will be feeling the effects of the delta variant for weeks and months to come, Longini said.

“I would think through a lot of September we’re going to see a lot of hospitalizations and deaths and strain on the system,” Longini said. “By October, things should be back down to a more endemic level like we’re seeing in May and June.”

In further evidence that the peak is near, new infections in Orange County are growing at a slower rate week over week than they were earlier in August, said Dr. Raul Pino, the state’s top health official in the county. New infections were essentially flat last week statewide compared to the week prior, coming with about 150,000, or about 1,300 fewer. In Orange County, there were about 8,900 fewer infections compared to 9,600 the week prior and the positivity rate went from 18.4% to 18.3%.

The county’s positivity rate has also held steady at 20%, which while sky-high, appears to have stopped climbing. Local hospitals also said new inpatient growth has slowed, even as more people are hospitalized locally and statewide than ever before.

The USF model predicts the high mark for hospitalizations will come about Sept. 8, where about 19,000 hospital beds will be needed for COVID-19 patients.

By Friday, 16,849 people were hospitalized with the virus, according to the Florida Hospital Association.

Projecting the peak daily death toll is tricky, Michael said, because hospitals have gotten better over the past 17 months at treating critically ill patients. And the availability of monoclonal antibody treatments — pushed by both President Joe Biden’s administration and Gov. Ron DeSantis — have also been proven in clinical trials to reduce hospitalizations in the virus fight.

But the model shows Sept. 14 as the projected high for daily deaths at about 330, Michael said.

The USF tool focuses on county-level data, including health information, cell-phone tracking data to assess mobility, Google search trends on topics like face masks and social distancing, as well as vaccination rates to track the pandemic.
So, like a weather forecast, the results can vary, Michael said. For example, over the past month, as businesses began requiring facial coverings and more people began wearing masks as cases exploded in Florida, the model has seen its projected peak become less severe.

Last month, the model predicted Florida would see a peak with daily case counts around four times higher than January’s highs and threaten to overwhelm hospitals. But with more measures instituted and vaccination rates climbing, now the projected high is about 1.5 times the January peak, and coming weeks sooner.

The University of Florida model accounts for people going to work and school and movement levels based on cell-phone data, as well as vaccination rates and virus transmission, Longini said.

“We watched what happened in India with the delta variant and other places, it’s exactly what’s happening in Florida right now,” he said.

He said because most of the world isn’t vaccinated, there’s still a high potential for the virus to mutate and form variants more infectious than delta and that are better at evading immune systems. Eventually, they could make it to the United States, and inevitably, Florida.

“If Florida doesn’t change its policies we could just see wave after wave,” he said.

Michael said the state still faces dangers in the virus fight as long as herd immunity isn’t reached.

Michael said the bar has been raised to reach herd immunity, which is when enough people have protection against disease to prevent its spread because variants have become more infectious. Now, to reach that level, he said 90% of the population needs immunity.

“In the next four weeks, the strategy would be to try to get the most people vaccinated 🇦🇸 possible. We’re very close to herd immunity if no other mutant arrives and if immunity is lasting,” he said, “it could be the endgame. But we need help.”

I agree that laws and mandates don't stop anything...they are in place to mold behavior in helpful/less harmful ways...if you don't comply, there are real world consequences potentially (sick, injured or killed people, expenditures of money, property damage) along with possible personal consequences (hurt, sick, property loss, money loss, loss of liberty)...one of the basic functions that we individuals empower to the form of government to which we consent is the protection of life, health and safety...hence the biggest government expenditures are on public safety

like a law, mandates are in place to shape behavior in a civil society to protect the society as a whole...which is the goal of public health programs...like mandating folks who work with food to wash their hands after using the toilet

CDC Buries Study Finding That Student Masking Has 'No Statistically Significant Benefit'

Less than three months ago, the Centers for Disease Control published a mostly-ignored, large-scale study of Covid-19 transmission in US schools which concluded that while masking then-unvaccinated teachers and improving ventilation was associated with lower levels of virus transmission in schools - social distancing, classroom barriers, HEPA filters, and forcing students to wear masks did not result in a statistically significant benefit.

A few major news outlets covered its release by briefly reiterating the study’s summary: that masking then-unvaccinated teachers and improving ventilation with more fresh air were associated with a lower incidence of the virus in schools. Those are common-sense measures, and the fact that they seem to work is reassuring but not surprising. Other findings of equal importance in the study, however, were absent from the summary and not widely reported. These findings cast doubt on the impact of many of the most common mitigation measures in American schools. Distancing, hybrid models, classroom barriers, HEPA filters, and, most notably, requiring student masking were each found to not have a statistically significant benefit. In other words, these measures could not be said to be effective. -NYMag

According to the report, scientists believe that the CDC's decision to intentionally omit the findings on student masking from a summary of the study amounts to "file drawering" the findings - the practice of burying studies that don't have statistically significant results.

"That a masking requirement of students failed to show independent benefit is a finding of consequence and great interest," according to Vinay Prasad, an associate professor in University of California, San Francisco’s Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. "It should have been included in the summary."

Epidemiologist Tracy Hoeg, author of a different CDC study on Covid-19 transmission in schools said that "The summary gives the impression that only masking of staff was studied," adding "when in reality there was this additional important detection about a student-masking requirement not having a statistical impact."

As Twitchy notes, NYMag's David Zweig questioned why the US is requiring masks when other countries don't.

David was joined by others pointing out similar facts:

 More via Twitchy:

But it’s not just this CDC study. There are no studies that Zwieg — or anyone — can find that “show conclusively that kids wearing masks in schools has any effect on their own morbidity or mortality or on hospitalization or death rate in the community around them”:

Meanwhile, as we've noted a few times in the past week, there are plenty of studies which conclude that masks provide minimal to no protection.

Why keep pushing the lies? You know they're wrong and have been wrong. Were you one of those kids that dragged a blanket or binkie around for security after 3 years old? It's the same thing with the masks.

As for the vaccine...better be looking at Israel for real studies. The vaccine won't ever get us to herd immunity. EVER. After 90 days it fades off. Vaccine manufacturers are going to make 33 BILLION dollars off the rubes lining up to get them.

how many of the kids who have tested positive and been hospitalized were wearing masks, and how many weren't...

wonder if CDC and medical agencies are collecting this real world data...

we have grand children attending pre-school and public elementary schools...I am hoping for quick clinical trials of vaccines in children and that they prove as effective for that age group as all others...

my daughter and SIL, who were vaccine hesitant have been vaccinated and now say they'll prolly have their daughters vaxxed also...

Video Shows Hordes Of Maskless ‘Elites’ At Pelosi Fundraiser, While She Wants To Lock Us Down

Mask-pushing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was apparently caught addressing an outdoor crowd of mask-less Democratic big wigs in COVID-19-riddled Napa Valley over the weekend, according to video and tweets.

A clip of the close-quartered fundraiser was posted on Facebook by Democratic Party donor and winemaker Kathryn Walt Hall — and promptly blasted out on Twitter.

The footage appeared to show dozens of unmasked people seated elbow to elbow at long luncheon tables as Pelosi gave a speech and masked waiters ambled between the listeners.

1. Napa is not any more Covid-19 riddled than anywhere else.
2. They were outside where masks and social distancing is not required. (Covid attacks indoor diners when they are walking around without a mask)
3. The wait staff aren’t required to wear masks under Napa rules but they do need to know their place at a Democratic fundraiser.

Hall Wines are great. I will be there next weekend sitting in the exact same spot from that video for their harvest celebration. Proof of vaccine or negative test is required. I’ll say hello to Kathryn for you peasants.

Kathryn Hall was the ambassador to Austria under President Clinton. Walt is her maiden name and the name of her Pinot Noir line of wines.
