I watch shows in my laptop. With that said, we got rokus on our tvs... they work well, but its not good for peg legging the fights. For that you gotta hook up a computer for it or cast it which should work.

I have a Samsung and it is fine. So too is LG and Sony (pricy). The rest is generally crap. Costco is your friend. Look for three HDMI ports.

Costco will be the simplest for anything up to and including 2k. Samsung HDTVs are generally the most feature rich and user friendly. Sony's are gorgeous, but you pay a premium for it.

If you want 4k, keep in mind that w/ anything less than 1200nits brightness and 4000+:1 contrast and your 4k won't be 4k. 4k depends on high brightness and true black / white pixels. In a low contrast TV, the black pixels are still illuminated, this stray brightness will murder the 4k picture. A good 4k TV you can watch with all the window shades up and sunlight streaming in and the picture will still overtake the room lighting. Yes, costco sells 4k, but I wouldn't buy one from them until they start carrying full on OLED panels, which are not inexpensive by any means.

OR-- Just get a damn 40" Fire TV?

Shawn, first off, I'd say go larger than 40", this is replacing the one upstairs in the extra room, right? From what I remember of the size of that room a 65" would be phenomenal in there, but a 55" would work well too. Make it impressive to watch....

Fire Stick vs Built in Fire... They do about the same, the control is easier with the built in, and it's one less remote, but fire sticks are not expensive. The built in one in your TV might not be able to be upgraded to do what the next external model can do when it comes out in a few years due to hardware limitations. Also, I don't think you can jailbreak a TV. Not that you NEED to jailbreak a firestick, it just allows for it to do certain things that some people want. Maybe that's of no interest to you, the greater majority of firestick owners don't have jailbroken sticks and they're perfectly happy.

Truth be told, with turkeyday right around the corner, I would get the TV and the firestick or roku separate. Those two, especially the firestick, are going to be dirt cheap on Amazon in 2 weeks.

The mid-level and up Costco HDTVs are fine for most people and situations. The prices are great when they are on sale too. And it's hard to beat a 90-day no-questions asked return policy, Depending on what you are planning on watching, you might only need a 2k TV. Spend the extra coin on larger screen. If the content isn't in 4k, and it's not a snazzy 4k tv, that upgrade is money that didn't need to get spent.

Thanks, Adam. The TV currently in the room is a 37" Vizio. I think a 55" may fit on that table... and if I'm gonna get a Firestick, I may as well have it jail-broken, right?

But a law abiding citizen like myself would have no idea how to go about that. 😰

How does one acquire such a firestick?

Shawn, the one thing Jail broken firesticks won't get you is free amazon content via amazon. Jailbroken sticks let you use 3rd party software that will stream from iffy content websites

As cheno said, easy to find pre-broken or directions on google. .

All depends what you want to watch. I acquired a pair of Roku2's years ago at a thrift store for like $10 each. I jailbroke (or whatever it's called for a Roku) them and discovered that after a month or so of use, they ended up being worth more to me by selling them on ebay for $100+ each than the free content I got. This was 10+ years ago though. I discovered I really didn't care about TV.

Google around, see what the content available on a jailbroken stick is. See if you want it. Nothing illegal about looking,

I do have Amazon Prime.

YouTube TV is seeming like more than it's worth to me at this point. For $65 freakin' dollars I could get Hulu, Disney/espn+ and Netflix and still have $$ left. AND still watch the sh*t I wanna watch.

Numismaniac, Mark, used to (maybe still does) offer Firesticks with an app installed that allows access to a ton of channels – local channels, PPV... all that stuff. The app only works on Android based devices (Amazon FireSticks and tablets are built on the Android platform under the hood with an Amazon layer on top of it). I think he would either sell you a “jail broken” Firestick with the app installed or you could send him one and he’d set it up for you.

I inquired about it and we talked a bit via PM but I don’t think it would be appropriate to share the PM’s on the forum but you could PM him for more information.

Here’s a snippet from one PM:
"It's 20 per month/30 days and includes ALL the PPV events live, EPL (English Premier League) , NFL (NFL Sunday ticket w/ red zone), ESPN+, NHL Center Ice, MLB (MLB Extra Innings) NBA (NBA League Pass), basically all the sports games that cost a bundle from cable, the Premium channels, not only from the US, but from the UK, Canada and Latin Channels, as well as some regular channels from those Countries as well. Also has Local channels from every State, Music Choice channels, Movie Pix (The Actors Guild, basically 24/7 channels with a wide variety of Actors.Actresses) Almost too much to explain. Much easer to see if you desire to FaceTime. AND, the 150+ XXX channels. It has a Movies on Demand section that includes Disney+, BET+, New releases, over 30+ genres/types from Action to Wrestling and the XXX. I honestly haven't even used or tried all the options!! I have been using it for around 6 months and I can't get over how much it includes. Once people see it, it sells itself, especially for folks that would have to pay a couple hindered bucks a month to get everything this includes. It has multi-view with option to show 4 channels, but you only hear the one that's highlighted. I will say that the faster the internet, the easier to use some of the options."

It doesn’t work on a Roku, Roku has their own OS. I didn’t go forward with it since I gave away my Firestick to a neighbor kid.
