You can have one, but you'll have to leave the money in a Dollar General bag in a garbage can at the Walmart in Poughkeepsie, NY, trade cars no less than three times, and pick up the CD player from behind the order box of the KFC in Lancaster, PA.

Definitive Technology speakers

Any thoughts?

Bose 791 vs DI 8R?

The Definitve is definitively cheaper soooooo,... yeah.

Seems to have good reviews

Not familiar with Def Tech. I am of no value here.

Makes one wonder why I'd even chime in?

I know literally nothing about ceiling speakers but when I did a quick comparison on the Crutchfield site, the DI 8Rs were priced at $359 each vs. $599 for a pair of the Bose 791IIs - or is there an older version of the 791s that’s more expen$ive? If the pricing is correct then maybe look into the discounted price on the Klipsch CDT-5650-CII? At $249 each, they almost look like a steal!

Either way, the one thing about speakers is, ultimately you gotta listen to them. IMHO, comparing specs and reviews helps maybe when looking at comparably priced products but the ear test is the one that should sway your buying decision. Oh, and of course, the pocketbook since that’s always a major part of the process.

The problem I ran into was the lack of in store setups where you could compare many brands/models. You could compare wireless headphones and smart watches to your heart's delight though

Back in the day, 🌫 and maybe they still do, but you could go into a car audio place and they'd have all their speakers set up on big display boards. The front ends were also part of the display so you could go through, say, the Sony XR-7400 and select different speakers to see how they matched up. I kinda see ceiling speakers to be, in very simple terms, car stereo speakers hung downwards, so no big deal if they weren't set up "properly".

But space is money and ROI rules the retail bottomline so the space needed for multiple display boards could be too much to spare.

That's what I was remembering too, but things have changed. Although I didn't look into car places specifically

Yeah, I'll get into Magnolia home theater (aka Best buy)before I buy. Not opposed to just paying a pro since youse guys aren't the discount cigar forum version of consumer reports I was hoping for. 😁

Never heard the DefTec speakers but one of the wealthier members & a hifi head at the lounge recommended them. As you can dial back the treble in reflective spaces like bathrooms & kitchens & dial up in absorbing spaces like bedrooms & living rooms on each individual speaker.

Never built a hut from the ground up for myself before but I'm trying to make it a decent hut.

There are plans for a walk-in humidor in the basement.

Of course the focus is the back porch since I'll be renting out the herf shed & pool with the old hut.

I have considered annexing the pool & cabana since the new hut will be right next door on the pool side. But the point is to downsize & reduce maintenance 🤔

Hopefully I'll be able to buy the hut behind the 2 properties in a couple years when the elderly couple who walks their dog through my land passes on.

I'll have a decent start to a compound I can start my own cult with. Lord willing of course

After blasting the stereo for a couple of hours, I’ve come to the peaceful conclusion that I don’t NEED to buy a more powerful, audiophile-ish integrated amplifier. The plain-Jane Sony receiver did just fine. Even at the loudest listenable volume level, there was no distortion and the amp didn’t clip. Pushing it a little past that resulted in me not wanting to stay in the room for an extended period. The house was filled with the Allman Brothers but I’m rarely gonna pump it up that loud so what’s the point of spending a couple grand for power I’m probably never gonna use? And I’m an old guy that listens to old music that’s recorded on analog tape so “high fidelity”, like beauty is in the eye / ears of the beholder.

I told my wife that while she was out at the mall, I helped her save maybe $2,000 ‘cause I decided to not replace the Sony receiver. She didn’t know wth I was talking about so hadda explain what I did while she was gone. She just shook her head and gave me that “look”. 🤣

my hearing has diminished as I age...it would be a waste of money to get an audiophile quality system as I would not be able to discern it from what I have in the man cave...

Yes, another part of the reason not to “upgrade”. Too many front row or close to the stage seats at loud rock concerts with ears ringing for a couple days. I KNOW my hearing is impaired. To say or think that I don’t have any hearing loss is just denial at it’s best.

But, I have sat close to my speakers and focused on the tweeters and can definitely hear something. Maybe not 20K stuff but hoping maybe around 15K? 12K? I think the crossover is at 6K so 10K at the very least.

Yes, I’m trying to rationalize my hearing loss so that it’s not that big of a loss. Like I said, denial at it’s best. 🙄

I found an AWESOME $500 ++ SAMSUNG BLUE RAY CD/DVD PLayer tv sound system with remote 2 speakers, a woofer and player in the trash on Monday...
Almost looks like NEW...NO SCRATHES and that clear plastic film that covers the units is still intact...
Fuc*ker works perfectly...
Off to the cabin that thing goes for awesome movie viewing...

Some rich folks have no brains or???
Could care less about what they send to the landfill these days...

Unbelievable.

It's probably bugged w/ audio and video. You know that right?

Why should agents go through the effort to break in and install listening devices when you will carry them through the door and set them up for the FBI?
