I'm looking to purchase a Glock 19 gen 5 for personal and home protection, before it becomes impossible to do so...
any opinions on this model, pros or cons, or better choices for above stated purposes?

17 is bigger and easier to shoot if you don't plan on carrying it.

Otherwise, good choice, never heard a bad thing about the 19.

The nice thing about the Gen 5 is the trigger doesn’t really need fixed, and you have an ambi mag release.

Two thing I would add, mag flare makes reloading easier and I like what it does to the grip shape wise for handling. If you have bear paws though you won’t like it. Second change the stock sights. The polymer stock Glock sights are trash. I don’t mind the rear square outline, some hate it, I hate polymer sights on a pistol. Truglow TFX Pro are awesome.

Glock 19 MOS you can put an optic on it without having the slide milled. Or you can get an aftermarket slide. Zaffirri Precision is my go to.

I recommend trying as many models as you're able. Then you can determine what feels/shoots best for you. I started the process certain I wanted a Beretta, and ended it as another CZ fanboy

I have a G19... not sure what Gen, but it's at least 10 years old. I also have a Glock 43 and a Beretta M9.

The 19 is a compact, but it's still too damn bulky and heavy for CC, IMO. Which is why I got the 43.

The Beretta M9 is my favorite, hands down, but that's likely because I carried it for years in the Navy and shot, quite literally, thousands and thousands of rounds through it. So if it comes down to an "oh, sh*t" moment... muscle memory will take over and I'll be fine.

My buddy Mike is the SW regional sales rep for Sig Sauer. If I was going to buy another gun it would probably be the Sig P226 MK25.

This, except, I like Berettas more than CZs. but Gran Power and Stryer best of all Steyr.

Dagger is great for the price but the trigger sucks donkey balls.

MACS should say “GEN __” on the side of the slide. You can also tell by the trigger shoe, mag release and guide spring.

To clarify, I don't dislike the Beretta, it's just the one I tried had a tendency to eject every 3rd to 5th casing directly to my forehead. I assume this was a shop maintenance issue of some sort, but I was put off a bit by that

While I do love my Brownings my carry is a Glock 26,it practically eats,sleeps and schits with me.I can see myself with a 43 in the very near future.IMHO ya just can't go wrong with a Glock regardless of model.

Glock triggers are easy to improve.

Doesn't say Gen anything... but there is a 1 G on the slide, so it looks like a Gen 1.

The Dagger looks like I need to look into a little more. I also like the idea of going to the local rental range and trying some of them out.

If your are at rental range, give the Sig p365 and S+W M+P Sheild lines a try too.

Glocks just never fit the shape of my dainty hands. I carried a 17 and a 19 for work, but switched to 1911s. John Browning must have had a mold for my hand when he designed the 1911.

You will need to decide if you want a concealed carry or home/range gun before you make a final choice. I have a Taurus G2C for cc. Inherited my FIL's FN Browning 9mm Hi Power that I keep for home and range use. He was a weapons design engineer for the Army and did not care for the 1911's low capacity. Got himself qualified to carry the Browning as his side arm. Both guns hold 14 rounds. For the price, the G2C is hard to beat. Picked one up a few years back for $200 on sale.
