When a cigar is sold as “12 years old” or however long, does that mean the tobacco was aged that long or that the cigar was laid down that long?
Thanks,

Not necessarily.

Could be anything, odds are that some portion of tobacco in the blend is 12 years old.

Unless you got it out of my humidor.

Kinda like the Camacho Pre-Embargo b.s.? 😳

For myself, I wouldn’t believe any of those marketing claims.

Is this about Rocky and that forgotten bundle of 8 year old tobacco he "found" in a warehouse?

I recall La Aurora had some large preferido many years ago, that was some rare tobacco from the 90s.
Only a 500 boxes or something?
They sold those here, at big brother and little sister for 5+ years.

I’m thinking of the Rocky Patel Ventige. The marketing talks about the ‘90 or ‘92 vintage blends and the 1999 Vintage specifically says 7 year old wrapper and 8 year old ligeros but some of the other Rocky cigars just talk about the blends. If they grow and harvest this tobacco every year then I can believe what I read in the marketing. Rocky has a 12 year old as well and I’m beginning to think that this tobacco is fermented in warehouses and then taken to the factory to be cut and rolled. So, yes, the tobacco is aged but no, the cigars themselves have not been laid down and aged for that amount of time. I’m not saying that’s how it really is, I’m just saying that’s one way of understanding the marketing.
Thanks to you and everyone else for taking time to reply to my question.

Age statements such as the RP 12 year are generally aged prior to rolling the cigar. some cigars are then aged again once rolled (most non Cubans are aged for several months to a year minimum prior to sale once rolled). the Cigar industry does not have the same stringent laws/rules as whiskey for example when it comes to age statements so take all age statements with a grain of salt.

Some info I found on the web about Padron cigars aging. This is in reference to the age of the tobacco they use when rolling cigars, not aging of cigars after rolled.

PADRON SERIE 1926 NO. 1 MADURO - aged 5-10 years.

PADRON FAMILY RESERVE 85 YEARS MADURO - aged 10 years

PADRON 1964 ANNIVERSARY MADURO - aged 4 years.

PADRON SERIE 1926 90TH ANNIVERSARY MADURO - aged 5 years.

PADRON FAMILY RESERVE 50 YEARS MADURO - aged 10 years.
