Could use some advice. I have been using a Xikar V-Cut and a Boulevard Perfect Cut Guillotine. lately no matter what I use Im getting some unraveling at the cap. Usually not too severe, but enough to make me realize something is not right.
Both cutters are relatively new (about a year old or so)
I use 62% Bovedas in a thermoelectric humidor with the temp at 68F. Now, the RH is consistently hovering between 65 and 67%, which I find odd, but cannot find any leak or anything like that.

So what do you all think? Maybe the cutters have gotten dull? Thanks guys

I had that problem with a Cuban Crafters stainless steel perfect cutter double guillotine. I minimized the problem but wetting the cap in my mouth before cutting. Now I use a Xikar V-Cut, still moisten the cap on my tongue before cutting, and very rarely have the wrapper start to unravel.

I think the guillotine cutters cut too deep, removing too much of the cap, which usually holds the outer wrapper leaf at the head of the cigar. You have to carefully insert the tip of the cigar into the cutter to remove only a paper (wrapper leaf) thin slice.

Try moistening the cap and avoid pushing the cigar too deep into the cutter, whichever type you use.

Delta that worked beautifully. Best smoke I’ve had in a while ( even though it’s a RP Autumn, which is actually kinda nice) so thanks again for the tip!

No matter what cutter you use don't cut past the shoulder (on a perajo) or you risk the wrapper coming loose. They make a few guillotines with a backing plate that makes it easy to cut only a thin sliver.

I second DED's agreement. I lay my double guillotine on a conuter/table, open it and place the cap into the hole and against the counter/table. Then I lift the cigar slightly in the cutting hole and snip.

I recall somewhere long ago reading that you are supposed to remove about the width of a nickel.

What DED said…..if your eyes aren’t F’d you should be able to see the difference, manufacturers use a different shade for the cap to make it easy.

I’ve been using a guillotine with back so it’s supposedly a “perfect cut” but I think you’re all right… cuts a bit too much off. The v cut worked beautifully yesterday once I wet the end before cutting. I’m going to try using the guillotine today and licking the

In summary, lick the tip before you stick it in, and don't go to deep?

I stopped using cutters long time ago I just pinch part of the cap off with finger nails and it makes a perfect wide punch cut every time. The cigars cap just needs to be constructed fairly decent.
