I am taking a plane home for thanksgiving, and I was thinking of just taking my 60 cigar desktop humidor on the plane wiht me. has anyone ever done this? do you guys think there would be any complications if i just put it in a box with some padding around it?

also--i assume i can't bring a cutter on board with me. but what about a lighter?

No lighter, no cutter, cigars are okay.

In August, I flew and took a good sized travel humidor and two humidor jars with me in my carry-on luggage ... I packed my cutters and lighter and lighter in my check-in luggage, because they could be taken away from you at the gate.

I learned that this is a policy that is inconsistently enforced ... some inspectors will allow cutters, while some will not ... someone might tell you to go ahead and take your cutter because they did and had no problem ... that doesn't mean you won't have one ... there's not a snowball's chance in hell I could have taken them through the inspection on the outbound flight, but would have been able to do so coming home ... different inspectors is why.

Put your humi in your carry on luggage, but be prepared for them to want to see it ... put your cutters and lighter in check-in luggage and you'll be fine.

I asked for the same information last month and got lots of good advice. I decided not to even hassle with a carry on. Put everything in and checked my one bag. All went very smoothly. I saw lots of folks getting searched, emptying pockets etc. at security check in. Good luck.

I've taken a desktop humidor in my carry on without any problem.No cutter and no lighter though.

My traveling humidor(an old cigar box) always travel in my carry on. If we start going down, I'm smoking!

D-rob raises the point of altitude ... I can't quote chapter and verse of scientific data and fact, but will tell you that due to prior (unhappy) experience, I will not let my travel humi go in the check-in luggage ... without considering the rough treatment accorded to check-in baggage, I'll tell you that I think that since the luggage compartment is very cold and unpressurized, it's highly detrimental to cigars, even on a fairly short flight ...

It's really this simple:
* Put your lighter/cutter(s) in your check-in baggage ... although you MIGHT be able to carry them on, you might not. Why take a chance ?
* Put your cigars in a carry-on ... doing so assures you that the care, temperature and air pressure will be in favor of their being smokeable at the other end

Steve is correct,I once flew with a 50 count desk top in my checked baggage before I took off they were right at 70%,when I got to Chicago they were at about 45%.YIKES!!! No casualties but needless to say they were smokin a bit dry for a day or so.Return trip they went carry on.
