Had to go to the doctors about ten weeks or so ago, jumped on the scale and it said I was 290lbs.I'm like no F_in' way this things broke, the nurse says sorry Mr Johnson but no it's not.I'm like OK no F_in' way is JJ gonna wheight 300 lbs and I decided to do something about it.

Thats when I decided on Atkins and 10 weeks later I'm down to 245-250 had to go dig in the closet for my old 40" Levis and they are even getting loose.Atkins works boys and girls...

Good job JJ!!
You do realize that Atkins is now deceased?
Watch yourself when you start back to carbs. A lot of people balloon up (seriously).

Good Job, yes I did it to loose weight and I've kept it off. Never go back to hard carbs, i.e., Bread, pasta, anything with Sugar listed as an ingredient. And you'll be fine. Oh you can have the occasional splurge. But it's a lifestyle for me.

Did atkins last year for about 4 months and dropped from 220 to 190. Then began consumming a few carbs here and there- went on vacation to Wyoming, Thanksgiving , Christmas... With the cheating it has taken 9 months to gain the weight back. Was planing to start back on Atkins again, butI have some health issues so my doctor has asked me to stongly limit my fat and cholesterol intake, no Atkins.
My wife began at the same time as me and dropped about 20 pounds, she has behaved better and has managed to keep the weight off.
Glad to hear of your success but it's like Robby said, it is a lifestyle. Hope for continued success.

"my doctor has asked me to strongly limit my fat and cholesterol intake, no Atkins." If you are strict, it lowers your cholesterol... The act of being in ketosis, the metabolic state, even though you're consuming fat and cholesterol, you don't keep it. It passes through so to speak... It doesn't seem to make sense, but it's a proven fact, it will lower your cholesterol. One key point here, you need to take vitamin supplements. The whole ketosis thing causes you not to absorb much of what you need in the way of vitamins and minerals, etc... Also the diet is limited since you don't eat carbs (Meat, Cheese, and Eggs). If you have issues with cholesterol, read up on Atkins before you decide.

Hey Robby,
I do understand how Atkins works and have seen it work. I understand that if strictly followed it can help lower cholesterol. I was very strict for the 4 months I was was on Atkins. I did see a slight decrease in my cholesterol. I have had some other test done recently and may have some other health issues that are possibly contributing to my high cholesterol. Still testing. Until we figure out what is going on I am going with the doctor recommendations. I did better on Atkins than any other diet or lifestyle modification that I had tried before.
I did like the Atkins diet and with the weight off felt better than I had in years.

I made the same statement to my doctor. She had the same reply as Sketcha.

Good luck Gecko, it's good that it's identified and you're doing something about it. It's the single largest killer of men and women in the country.

This is what I do for a living,,let me make it simple..A calorie is a unit of energy, we take energy in and give energy back,,as long as we give back more than we take in we will burn fat...As for Atkins,,carbs hold water each gm of carbs holds 3.2 gms of water,,drop the carbs and the water disappears,,also carbs convert to glycogen ,,glycogen is our preferred energy source,,in absence of glycogen your boday will burn muscle for energy (or it will die)...So ehat do you lose on the Atkins diet,,muscle and water...not good

So when you see people who used to be fat, and now they're not, what happened to their fat?

Charlie

PS it works, just don't let it slide over the years.

Congrats JJ. I'm also on the Atkins plan. Been doing it since December. I've gone from 280 down to 245. I've still got 20-30 pounds to go. I cheat a little once in awhile but nothing too severe. My idea of cheating is a full scale assault at the chinese buffet about once a month. But I stay away from the dessert table. Recently, I've even rediscovered grilled salmon. I haven't had my blood checked in awhile so I don't know how it's affecting the cholesterol but I feel great.

Congrats on the weight loss, guys. My suggestion would be to also incorporate some form of exercise in to your weight loss program. Muscle burns fat. I find that I sleep much better at night when I'm on a regular exercise program.

Thank you Dr. Atkins and rest in peace.

The diet works PERIOD
Boo to all the naysayers and skeptics. They have never proven him wrong.

I have been on it a few times and usually loose 8-10 pounds a week for the first month and then about 5 a week the second month.

I love pasta and good crusty bread, so it is difficult in one sence, BUT all the meat you want... thats a real mans diet. A pound of bacon or sausage and 6 eggs for breakfast a few burgers sans the bun for lunch or a grilled chicken salad for lunch, oink, cackle, or moo for dinner and I am a happy man.

Alas... I do need to get back on it however. Darn:-)

bigw - my uderstanding is that when your body does not have glycogen it burns fat not muscle. People on Atkins maintain more muscle than any other diet. See studies from UofI, Washington University, UofMI etc...
Also, see the glycemic index on all foods. Both Atkins and the Readers Digest C1 diet use this concept.

From what Ive read so far in Dr Atikins newest book and from what I've always believed true from the Gov pyramid.Your body burns sugars/carbs and fat for energy, your muscles however live on protien. So it makes perfect sense, that, and you can almost feel the fat being burned while in full Ketosis. As far as muscle loss,my weight has been staying the same for some time now but my so called love handles and my gut have taken a dramatic turn for a downsizing.I've los a whole chin besides!I'm even considering movin' down to my 38's for christ-sake...LOL

You can't live your life by starving yourself! We really wern't meant to be fuggin vegatarians and I can live on this fuggin' diet, well except for the almost no beer part...LOL

If you starve your body of Carbs and protien like on most "diets",if you starve yourself period of course it will burn muscle. This is not the case on Atkins IMHO.On Atkins you need to eat!period!

The glycemic index is a joke,,most people combibne foods,,nobody eats just one food by itself,,so you can take a high g food and a low g food and made it a moderate g index meal,,,,ie..rice cakes high,,peanut butter low, put them together.....Check the National Weight Loss Registry,,nobody on the registry suceeded long term using any fad diets
