How many of you have a DSL connection, either at home or in your business? Right now, I'm trying to gather a little information on what availability, cost and customer satisfaction are like ...

Do you already have it? ... how much is it where you live? ... or is it even available? ... do you like it? does it work well ? ... you get the idea ...

I've got DSL because I couldn't get Cable broadband. I live in a suburb of Chicago, I pay $29.99 for the 768/128 package. It's through SBC and I haven't had any outages so far (knock on wood). If you can get Cable, do it. It's more expensive but more than twice as fast. All in all, price is right, speed could be faster but I'm very pleased.

Steve, I had DSL waaaay back when. Got sick of it dropping. Almost everyday! I finally hung out at the local CO, and asked to talk to an I&R guy. I told him my problem, and low and behold...seems some goober was running up and down the connections with a tone finder and every time he'd run it up and down it would knock me off. After repeated chances and sore knees from begging...I went to cable modem. Never looked back. Same price, but with my current hook up...I'm at near T1 speed! Woo-hoo!

I miss my T3 😞

Anyone have the chance to use Internet 2? It's faster than you can imagine.

Do you already have it? YES
how much is it where you live? $30 at the house and abot $70 for three lines at the office with dedicated ip's.
do you like it? yes
does it work well? yes

i use verizon and had them split the line outside so i do not use filters on the phones and i can use the phone and the computer at the same time. the dedicated ip's at the office never have a problem. the one at the house drops out on some occassions. not as much now as it did several years ago when i first had it installed. most of the time, rebooting the dsl modem gets it back up and running.

a litle over 700kbs down and 125 kbs up. seems fast enough for me. eliminating aol was a good choice too. i don't know why i hung on to it or so long.

from what i have been able to gleam, you use whatever is available where you live. if you have choices, much better.

SteveS --- go with 'SBC Yahoo DSL' ... and they've got a promo going on right now for $29 a month for the first year ...

http://promo.yahoo.com/sbc/dsl/

It's what I switched over to when my other provider went 'belly-up' ... and it's been fast, reliable, and the bes DSL I've has so far (of three) ...

Installation was a breeze ... and hasn't been a bit of trouble since the day I installed it.

1300 down/128 up ... I don't need it any faster than that!

I'm not sure where it is ... LOL ... but it's got to be pretty darn close!

They say that if you can get close to 90% of your rated line speed (mine is 1500), everything is perfect, so I guess mine is 'nearly' perfect!

In an ideal world, you should be able to see in your browser download window, during a sustained transfer, a rate equal to your purchased speed, divided by 8 (to get bytes), less 13% (TCP/IP and ATM header overhead).

BTW ... the $29 a month (for the first year) is only the 'promo' package, and goes to $49 a month thereafter ...

I went with DSL a year or so Back... Ameritec DSL they came out hooked it up sent me the Box and all to hook in.. I dealt with them for a couple weeks... never once did it ever Take... they came out 3-4 times Sinked the lines or whatever the F*&k that means... Still no go... I called and Can'l service with them... Now Note: this was also my Phone Bill.. 49.99 a month with there modum... I had already shipped their Modum and software back to them...100.00 Deposit ... I shipped out Overseas... Wife dealt with Ameritec shutting off my Phone ETC ETC ETC... then they wouldn't deal with her and at the time my Mom had Power of Attorney... they wouldn't acknowledge that even... I had her mail me the info... 8 days later I call someone who might have gave a **** from Somewhere's in the Desert...I talked to just about everyone in their office Accept for Mr. Mean... and Finally I got it straightened Out.. I also let them know I was on a Sams Club ATT Card and I want credit for my Phone Card Usage because Normaly I use it to call Family instead of A$$Holes like this!!!
Never got Credit for the card.. But I did get all my Credit and deposit back and they did not charge me for the rehook-up... when everything was Straight then I told the Wife to send the final bill payment to them... and switch our service... I think she Wrote KMA in Bold letters on that Bill... and I never went back to them even with the Special Offers they kept calling to get us to switch back...

We Run Cable now and with the speed on this computer and the Laptop I can't fart faster then I can download stuff from the Internet.. or send emails LMAO!!!!

SteveS,

When you call, ask what your minimum speeds will be for your area. I recently moved and transferred my DSL. I was getting Slim's 1.3M/128K at the old place, but now I'm recording 311K/59K. I still wouldn't trade it for dial-up, but I'm looking forward to finishing the remodel.
